Two Head Coaches After Season over< My Thoughts

(Oct. 22, 2005) -- At least one NFL team has found out that it won't need the luck of the Irish to lure away Charlie Weis from Notre Dame.

Weis' six-year contract at Notre Dame includes a modest $1.5 million buyout, a number that caused one NFL head coach to remark this week, "That's it?"

That's it. The buyout means that, despite the fact that he has one of the country's most heralded recruiting classes coming in next season, Weis has positioned himself to leave Notre Dame after this season for the NFL if he so chooses.

And he might. Should Weis cap Notre Dame's impressive season with a win over Tennessee and then another win in a major bowl game, he could vault himself into the No. 1 coaching prospect on the radar of NFL owners.

As it is now, he already is way up there. One team, and quite possibly more, have been quietly investigating Weis behind the scenes, and finding out what kind of head coach he would be, and they love him. NFL opportunities will be there for him. This doesn't mean he is going; it just means it is under consideration. But this is a developing situation sure to get lots of attention in the weeks to come.

There certainly are going to be enough openings at the NFL level. Some NFL executives expect there to be 10 to 13 head coaching changes this offseason, a number derived from the percentages.

On average, there are six and a half coaching changes per year and 13 every two years. Last season, there were only three. That would mean there could be, minimum, 10 this offseason, though there could be more. And Weis' name will be linked to some -- guaranteed.

Yea Itd be nice to have a Parcells deciple, but Weis has such a good thing going already.

Only way is if his team at one point gets to be so dominant he'll get bored with it

I'm not much of a poster here in the zone. I'm more the reading type. I read alot and I'm here just about every day. This has got to be one of the worst posts ever!

Probably? You're crazy. He's not going anywhere for a very long time. He went to school at ND, he's not leaving. He'll grow old there, bank on it. By the way, being the Head Coach at ND is a better job than just about every head coaching job that there is. Weis going pro is not happening any time soon. Move on.

I don't think he will be at ND for a long time. Three or four seasons tops if he has continued success. Maybe me saying Green Bay was a bit premature, but I am crazy. The Packers job will be available after this year or at least it should be. Sherman is terrible.

Notre Dame is a great job, but it is still not the NFL. He will come back to the NFL at some time and I don't think it will be that far down the line. Maybe by then, Parcells will be ready to re-retire. I am certainly not push Parcells out the door right now.

Maybe, maybe not again not all coaches care to be baby sitters for millionaire players not when the college they coach for treat them as well as they do and pay them as well as they do.

Very valid point and also there have been many great college coaches who have no desire to go to the NFL. Some of these guys are treated like Gods at these colleges

You know the thing about Charlie is this. He DID want to coach in the NFL. Nobody gave him a chance, and they had their share of chances to hire him. I'm sure some of it was health reasons and some of it was that the Patriots were playing all the way to February every year. But he does feel that all those teams had their chance to hire him and now it's too late. He might even be a little bitter about it. He feels it's Notre Dame's gain and the NFL's loss. Like I said earlier there's no better coaching job than Notre Dame, especially when it's your Alma Mater and especially when you're winning.

I hope Jerry Jones could pull of a signing of Jimmy Johnson at the end of the year.... Im not saying im cancelling out on Parcells but, if we don't make it to the playoffs the franchise itself going to lose fans, like the Cowboys just could win, even with a excellent team... Bill Parcells probably would retire and Jerry would look for a big sign which will be Jimmy Johnson or Barry Switzer or Pete Carroll, USC Head Coach who coached New England Patroits 3 years to the playoffs, or Larry Coker, Head Coach of Miami Hurricanes, who coached players like Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Eddie George, Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Bryant Mckinnie, Olando Pace, Edward Reed, Jeremy Shocky, Edgerrin James, Daniel Franks Known as Bubba, and Willis McGahee...

I like Larry Coker the most because of his experience coaching good runningbacks not to mention Frank Gore who is running good with the 49ers.

With Larry Coker experience with these players, I feel that he could fit right in with the Cowboys...

This is Larry Coker profile below and Pete Carroll...

If we do not make the playoffs this year with this team I will be leading the mob of angry villagers with torches and pitchforks looking to run Bill Parcells out of town. This team has the talent to stack up against or outplay just about any team in the NFL and there is no excuse for Parcells not getting them to the playoffs. Even though he has built a great team he has lost us two games and very nearly a third with poor game management and coaching on the sideline; this trend cannot continue.

But as for Parcells replacement; none of the coaches mentioned here excite me. College coaches do not always translate into good NFL coaches; in fact college coaches for the most part scare me. Plus major college HC jobs are often as good as or better than many NFL HC jobs. I want us to pick a good solid young defensive coordinator to come in and replace Parcells when he is gone; whether he leaves this year run out of town on a rail or if he leaves later of his own accord.

My own choice is Dick LeBeau; the DC from Pittsburg. He failed in Cleveland I believe it was but then so did Bill Bellichik. He is a 3-4 coach and that will be the personnel that we will have in place when he arrives so the turnover time should be minimal.

I really like this. Hopefully Bill will move aside whenever he becomes available.

One college coach on a lot of teams radar is Kirk Ferenz, teams have been looking into him for awhile, but hes been waiting for the right spot, like Saban did.

This is the ONLY guy on my radar..............................then he could hire BP as defensive coordinator...i'd be so happy! Ultimate O coordinator in Weis and D coordinator in BP...:lmao:

Umm... Dick LeBeau was HC in Cincinnati, not Cleveland.

If the Cowboys do something as ironic as fire Bill Parcells to hire Larry Coker or Pete Carroll, they've lost me.

I won't say they lost me...but I would be HIGHLY upset.

Charlie Weiss is the only College coach I would consider right now...and no I am not forgetting about Stoops.

Hiring one of these two bozos to replace Parcells would be catastrophic. Having said that, don't put it past Jerry.

Okay... there hasn't really been a difference in those two teams the last 15 years. They tend to be interchangable in my mind.

I want Larry coker also Im sick of this Old school trash Parcells throws out every week!!! Larry coker would be a great option for Jerry next year. Another Coach from Miami baby!!

Of course his name will be rumored for every open job in the NFL, why not with what he's doing at ND. But that's where it ends. He's not leaving anytime soon. Not before his 6 year $12 million contract that's for sure. That's not a bad contract either. Read my earlier post for further details why. The NFL had their chance and never offered him a job. Now that he has success at ND, they all want him. It's too late now.

And leaving after one year? Whatever idiot that wrote the article and suggested that and believed that it's even a remote possibility is just plain stupid. Do you think Charlie has spent and is spending many, many, many hours recruiting High School seniors and now even juniors for nothing? He's watching tape, making calls when he can and even text messaging kids. Trust me, he'll at least fulfill his 1st contract and probably more. He said he and his wife are going to grow old in South Bend and I believe it. Don't forget he went to school there and that means alot to him. Also, coaching at ND is much different than coaching just about anywhere else in the country. It's a better job than most NFL jobs, maybe all of them, especially when you're winning. When you win there, no other coach gets more attention, NCAA or NFL. We'll see I guess.

There is a huge difference between ND and an NFL job. In the NFL, there's usually on one arse to kiss, the owner. At ND, lose 3 games in a season and don't get a BCS bid and there's about 14-15 arses a coach has to kiss just to see the next season.

Hmmm...I don't think any of these players, other than Terry Glenn, play for the Cowboys. So exactly how does Coker having great players play for him equate to him being a great coach?
