Two players were on our radar

“We had (Gregory) rated high on our board. But we also, from the get-go, have pinpointed if we could not reach for a player, but if we could find a player with having brought in Hardy. But if we could find a player that could potentially be a corner that, if we get (Morris) Claiborne back like we are anticipating and hopeful that could also be a free safety, and an excellent free safety, then that was the ideal fit as far as the position to draft for us. There was no question, and so we were never tempted to do anything moving around to do anything about any other player up there. Especially the player your talking about there. And then when we were able to get the player that we really wanted at the position that we wanted then that made that a non-consideration to get her done. In other words, we waited on a chance to see if we were going to be able to get this corner/safety.”

I heard that, but it was in response to a question about him and I have never heard a team openly state a player that is still available has been taken off of their draft board.

I don't know how they kept him on the board and were okay with the off field stuff and still selected Byron Jones.

I do as well. We know the Pack took Randall and some folks are saying the Pats liked Jones, so if we traded out of the 1st, we lose both.

If you dig deep enough I think you'll find all of our picks were going to go one pick later.

There are kids in 3rd world countries wearing Matt Johnson Indianapolis Colts jerseys.

Exactly right. You can't out cover people in this league. You have to create disruption up front to shut down these offenses. The Jones pick does nothing to change that dynamic.

Unless you're talking about adding extra seconds to our pass rush because of tight coverage. Then I'm listening.

Having a better safety than Wilcox in the secondary could open the defensive playbook some which could allow us to generate pressure from various blitz packages. When you trust your safeties to not get you beat it opens more options.

Jones specifically mentioned Gregory, so I doubt that.

don't buy into what Jerry says, Gregory is a second round pick at best and a classic tweener, not a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme... I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, he's a chronic pot head, he'll be suspended by the NFL within a year...when you fail a drug test going into the combine where you know they test, you're not too bright

I was talking about cornerbacks not safeties. If he's coming here as a safety, I like the pick more. Much more, actually.

That's bs because we played a lot of single high safety with Wilcox over the top.

Or you're really addicted. No way would I have drafted him. I don't want that kind of guy in my locker room.

The character concern was likely a tie breaker if they were equal, but I have little doubt they had Jones higher.

I understand why they didn't draft Gregory. If they believe in Demarcus Lawrence then drafting a skinny pass rusher closes the door on Hardy being here long term. I believe they are not just renting Hardy for this season. You don't let a guy who can be the force Hardy can just walk. He has the potential to elevate the entire defensive line.

Kendricks was the "board wiped out" pick at 27 i think

ie all the corners gone, both running backs, the non-pothead pass rushers gone.... can't trade down = pick Kendricks

This is a message board where a strong percentage wanted to trade a first round pick for a 30 year old running back with two thousand career carries to his name, not exactly a forward-thinking crowd in terms of the 2015 NFL.

I don't think that statement's true. I haven't seen anyone wanting to trade a 1st out right for Peterson. I did say I would trade 27 for Peterson and 45.

Good point.

Jones is D captain-type talent, and his evolution should bring about more cohesion and generate variation in coverages and assignments.

That may leave Mo behind.

That's definitely two players at the opposite end of the character spectrum. Jones fits the profile of a Dallas draft pick in recent years. Gregory seems to be the type of player they would take off their board. They usually avoid the guys with drug issues.

It's actually not. Just because we played certain formations that our personnel dictated we play doesn't mean we wouldn't have liked to have other options. Jerry jones mentioned his ability to move around and give us more options on defense many times. I trust our coaches are in a better position to know how they feel about Wilcox and Mo Claiborne than we are. Having a player they can play as a nickel corner or FS allows us to make sure we have the best cover guys on the field when we need them. Jerry spent way too much time talking about Jones ability to play safety to dismiss it.
I believe Carr will still be on this team this year.

they want to get Jones on the field immediately. Based on Jerry's comments last night, it's 50/50 whether that happens at CB or FS.
