Two TE's I'm Look At In 2017 Draft

We need an all-around TE in the mold of a Jason Witten. That leaves both Engram & Hodges out, since they're just large WRs. I do like Butt, O.J. Howard of Alabama, & Jeremy Sprinkle of Arkansas. All three are big tight ends who come from traditionally running programs. You can't play TE at any of those schools if you don't love to block. Howard isn't quite as tall as I would like, but he's tough, & is a good receiver. We MUST get a quality TE this draft. Witten has really started his decline this year, & might have only one more season in him. God knows we don't have one currently. We need to bring someone in while Witten is still here, to show them how the best go about their craft. I would prefer we get one in the second-third round area, since DE & CB are such big needs on this team.

Technically 3, but Engram will most likely go early in the second. The first I'm looking at is Bucky Hodges

He's 6'7 with INSANE catching ability. He's a TE you can line up on the inside (Needs to work on his blocking though) and outside. If he's there late in the second, I'd take him.

The second would be Jake Butt

He's the TE some scouts are saying looks similar to Witten. I think he's closer to a Hunter Henry, needs to put on a couple more pounds before coming into the league. He doesn't have freakish abilities like Hodges, but he's more polished as a route runner. Sadly, he needs to work on his blocking as well.

This is a really solid draft, in my opinion, for TE's. We can cry all we like about how we have wasted picks in the past on TE's, but we need someone to replace Witten or at least split reps with him here shortly. This is a good draft to find the future.

I'm skeptical that the Cowboys would use a receiving TE even if he is elite.

Good stuff. However, we'll have to fight the Patriots to get him. They need a Gronk replacement.

Unfortunately, you're not going to find many TE's that can catch and block well. You're more likely to not find quality blockers at TE than a non-quality receiver.

Swaim was a good blocker out of Texas, but he wasn't used very much. He doesn't have the skills to be a really good receiver.

Witten wasn't the greatest blocker out of Tennessee, but he did have the size to be a good blocker and Parcells and the coaching staff really worked to develop him into a quality blocker.

My guess is that is the best tact to take...find a quality receiver that has the size, toughness and willingness to block.

Escobar doesn't have the frame for good blocking, although he does have long arms. He's just not willing to block either and that's so key at the position because when you first have to block at TE and you don't know what you're doing...you're going to get your butt kicked for a while and it's no fun. When I played in high school that was something I had to deal with, but I grew up wrestling against my cousin who ended up being NY State champ years later and was 3 years older than me, so I knew how to deal with getting my butt kicked and sticking with things and working to get better. Find me that guy and the coaching staff can make him into a very effective all-around TE.

The only thing with Butt is if for whatever reason Sanchez has to play we could be really playing with fire there.

They have not a single clue how to use a second TE as a receiver. If Gronk was drafted by Dallas he'd be Anthony Fasano. I guarantee it.

He has a reputation as being lazy and admits to it. He's a finesse "TE" at best. I've watched him and appears to be very soft. Pass.

For anyone who likes Leggett, does he appear to have any interest in blocking from what you have seen?

It would be awesome to watch him catch 10/8/13 catches for 3 years until Witten decides to retire.

I think we're at the point now where we're no longer looking for a second TE. We need a starter.

Yes, I know. Saint Jason. We will all cherish the memories. Maybe they can name a highway after him or something.

Witten is still a year away from being redundant, this draft we are starving for edge pressure talent(five teams ahead of us in the draft have same hunger) and defensive backs. I do agree time is short for the Witten man. TE in the 3rd is the best I can see if we are drafting for need and abandon bpa. Need to hit the lottery again Will McClay please deliver.

No, not draft for need. Just recognize starting TE is a need when you're selecting players. Don't bypass a TE because you think it's not needed.

I agree if one of those top TE's(Howard,Butt) drop in the first, I hope the Jones at least hesitate.

Howard is listed between 6'5" and 6'6". How tall do you like your TEs, lol?

We need a starter if Witten doesn't play 2-3 more years.

We need a starter. We can't let Jason Witten hold the position hostage because everyone worships him. He's in rapid decline. We can upgrade and should do so.

I agree that we need to start looking for Witten's replacement, but rapid decline? I definitely do not see that. Has Wit lost a step? Sure, but he's still producing, still has some of the most reliable hands in the league and is still an elite blocker. If you think Swaim's absence is an issue, plug some rookie (any rookie) in for JW and see what happens to the running game.

Elite blocker lol. Stop. He's not. He's not even a very good blocker anymore. He can't move. He can't get down the seams. His presence on the field limits the offense.
