Technically 3, but Engram will most likely go early in the second. The first I'm looking at is Bucky Hodges

He's 6'7 with INSANE catching ability. He's a TE you can line up on the inside (Needs to work on his blocking though) and outside. If he's there late in the second, I'd take him.

The second would be Jake Butt

He's the TE some scouts are saying looks similar to Witten. I think he's closer to a Hunter Henry, needs to put on a couple more pounds before coming into the league. He doesn't have freakish abilities like Hodges, but he's more polished as a route runner. Sadly, he needs to work on his blocking as well.

This is a really solid draft, in my opinion, for TE's. We can cry all we like about how we have wasted picks in the past on TE's, but we need someone to replace Witten or at least split reps with him here shortly. This is a good draft to find the future.

I really think TE is a darkhorse for our first rounder. Hodges REALLY intrigues me

We need another TE.

See my comments in the OJ Howard threads. Amazes me that people want to use a first or second round pick on guys who will produce like Escobar or Swaim. The next time Hodges blocks will be the first.

I don't trust in the coaching staff's ability to incorporate a receiving TE into the offense alongside Witten, though I'm intrigued by Hodges.

Anyone want to take a bet he doesn't measure anywhere close to his advertised 6'7"?

I think O.J. Howard is one of the best all-around TEs available in the draft and tailor-made for this offense as he's used extensively as a blocker in-line and on the move in Alabama.

Many TEs come out of the draft not blocking well. Most normally need to develop there.

This is very similar tot he 2013 draft for TEs, a lot of good choices. Now if this coaching staff figures out how to use the TE we draft while we have Witten is another story.

You think O.J. Howard even last long enough in the draft for him to be considered at our pick?

We're 0-3 on 2nd round TE's in the passing game. Even Hanna was seen as a receiving TE at OU and ran 4.49.

We have no clue how to use a 2nd TE in the passing game. Would you use a 1 or a 2 on Joe Looney?

We have both Hanna and Swaim through 2018. And Witten is still here. Rico is on the PS with a lot of potential. Dude is working at Tackle to learn how to block.

We use our TE's a lot in the run game, and much more in blocking, than we do as a "stretch the seam" type guy. We look for guys that can block, and can hopefully find a soft spot in coverage. If we take a guy he's going to be a great route runner and a good blocker.

Swaim had some mojo with Dak in the preseason this year and he was coming along in blocking so he has some potential. Hanna is what he is, a pretty good blocker that apparently is reliable in his assignments, that's why we resigned him.

With all our defensive needs and a need for a 2nd WR, I'd be very surprised if we're even looking at TE's before the 4th round. We'll still have Witten, and both Hanna/Swaim for two more seasons.

We're not going to draft one of these athletic guys that can't block, won't ever happen. I think the 2018 draft is the earliest we'll start to look at guys. Hanna/Swaim will have one year left, and we should have a good idea what we have in Rico by then.

I give it about a 1% chance we take anyone really worth mentioning this year, although it is a really deep class. That's actually good for us, should push some extra pass rushers/secondary guys to us in the 2nd/3rd.

At this moment (IMO), I think he's in our range (25-32). However, how he performs at the Combine could impact that.

As a receiver, Howard was severely underutilized in Alabama; Kiffin simply doesn't use TEs in his scheme.

I have a feeling he moves himself out of range after combine. Possibly pushes a WR down to us. Maybe JuJu or Corey Davis.
