Ugh.

Would not be good if we start week 1 without Smith/dealing with significant back pain to go up against Vernon.

Tad worried this issue may never go away.

There is really no point in taking any chances with him. If I were the team I would probably not let him see any action in the preseason at all provided that in practice he is showing that he is in good shape and ready to go.

Yeah, a double-whammy. Vernon is a player that gives Smith trouble, even at 100%.

Good news or bad news first?

OK, lets go with the bad news first. Bad news, I don't care how young you are, you only have so many games in you. It'll be the same with Smith.

Good news now! The good news is that Smith is getting paid like 8.8 Mil this season. Next year, it bumps to 17 Mil and continues to pay anywhere from 12 Mil to 15 Mil for the next 6 years. We basically have 4 more years before we could easily manage a cap hit. Smith aint walking away from Football, just when it starts paying out big in the next 4 years. Smith retires and he's walking away from a huge amount in future earnings. He'll do whatever it takes to get on the field.

I won't be overly concerned about this until I hear that he needs an epidural or surgery on the disk.
They're talking about epidurals already.

This is VERY concerning. Success depends on Tyron Smith, simply put.

And here's the worst part. Once you injure you're back, you have a bad back for life. It flares up all the time, and doctors can't fix it.

This is a bit of an overstatement, especially when taking into account the back issues Smith has now and could have after, say, a surgery.

I have no idea the extent or severity of his bulging disc, but I had one back in the 90s and had an operation to remove part of the disc. My back has been fine ever since and certainly nowhere near as bad as before. As I said, because part of the disc is still in the back, if I sleep wrong or wrench my back, I can experience some numbness in my right leg as that portion of the disc can press on the spinal cord, but it usually corrects itself in a day or two. I get sore backs from time to time, but again, not for long periods of time.

I had my surgery 20 years ago. Back surgery is more advanced now and Smith will have access to cutting edge training equipment and programs that I didn't have. I wouldn't assume disc surgery, if we get to that point, for Smith at his age would be a career killer at all. It will be interesting to see how the season plays out and if the surgery discussion comes up this offseason.

Backs aren't fixable with surgery. I've known about 100 people who have had back surgery. Didn't help one of them.

That's simply false. I had back surgery and it fixed me. At it's worst, I had numbness down my left leg because of a herniated disc (L5-S1) almost daily. I had herniated disc surgery and I have never had that kind of discomfort since.

I doubt you know 100 people who have had surgery and I suspect if you do, many had far more complex back surgeries than if all Smith has is a herniated disc issue.

Well, you won the powerball. It's the most ineffective surgery out there. Chiropractors are a better option.

I've had back problems, and I've been told by numerous doctors that the nerve/muscle relationship is still not understood well. It's not just the disc that causes the spasms, and they don't know how to stop those sensations.

What's the most ineffective surgery out there? Be specific. Don't lump all back surgeries in together because they are not the same. A simple diskectomy is not nearly as serious as say a back fusion surgery, for example.

I'm saying that they have minimal, if any, impact on the recurring symptoms for the vast majority of people. Perhaps for sciatica, but for back spasms and whatnot, it just doesn't work well at all.

And to the point, for a guy Tyron's size, this is absolutely horrible news if they are already talking about epidurals.

Well I do hope they have tried some injections on him, they mentioned back fusion to me but they wanted to try the injections first. The doc said I was young enough and had enough tissue back there that the disk actually slipped back in place.....and I was older than Tyron when this happened.

Went to a chiropractor first (he couldn't bend me at all) and he recommended the injections doctor first before any back fusion, best decision ever made for me. Couldn't sleep, eat, or even sneeze without feeling it. Mine was playing basketball, but at the end of the day, Tyron needs to check out all his options.....glad I did cause afterwards i was able to bend as much as before.

But he will always have to be more careful with it, that is true.
