So your going to pay tyron 13 million to fill in for Steele until he gets back? And hope Tyron isnt hurt coming out of TC?
I said if he's willing to work with the team and be flexible (which in NFL terms means pay cut) then yes, it's a logical choice especially with how the front office has literally done nothing in the last half decade to add depth to a position that's arguably the 2nd most important position in the sport.

Obviously for most teams the ideal scenario would be use your cost-effective backup that you've been developing but for the cowboys that choice is Josh Ball........

So using the #1 pick last year to draft our future LT wasnt doing anything?

And your serious that you want to pay some 10-13 million for a fill in RT that might not even be healthy?

Agree Josh Ball is a joke.

Don't know if he would be considered depth or developmental since he was going to be a day 1 starter at either guard or tackle. 2017 (Tyrons 3rd season of back flare ups) till last year they literally didn't do anything to improve depth

Did you not even read my post ? I said if he's flexible and willing to work with the team (which would mean playing for significantly less or playing on an incentive-based deal) then yes having someone already on your roster who knows the system and can play both sides is a better scenario then Josh Ball or dumpster diving for a Stephen Jones special veteran minimum swing tackle.
Agree Josh Ball is a joke.
And that's exactly why there currently negotiating with Smith. If they had a solid 3rd or 4th rounder that they had been developing the last 3 or 4 years (which was well past the point of knowing that Tyron was injury prone and well past the point of "you know getting a good tackle for depth is probably a good idea") then they wouldn't even been in this situation.

I'm not arguing that it's the best or most ideal scenario but reality is I'm not surprised it's happening given the situation and the events leading up to this

Makes a lot of sense. Tyron is more of an Eric Fisher type at this point in his career. Dallas can save a little over 9 million by cutting him, which is basically the difference between what he could make on the open market versus his current contract.

If he agrees to cut his salary down to his “fair market value” based on similar players, then Dallas could actually save more money this year against the cap than if they cut him outright.

Who would you rather have at swing tackle — Tyron Smith or a competition between Waletzko and a wannabe tough guy who beats up on women more than defensive linemen?
A restructure doesn’t pay him any less money but spreads it out. He’s in his last year so can’t restructure and I don’t see him just cutting his pay in half since he played on a less than market value his entire career. I could see them extending him so there is room to spread out his pay

After a stellar Cowboys Career resulting in a probable HOF Honor... Tyron might be thinking this is his last go-round at becoming part of an NFL Championship Team...thus yielding to the FO's request for a lesser 2023 salary.
They could easily lower his 2023 salary yet still pay him all his money. That’s kinda what I expect

As a personal aside, Tyron Smith is a future HOF'er. Is there really a reason for him to play another year? I would love to see him retire without having to use a cane to walk in his latter years.

I personally thought he was going to retire after the 2021 season. Was literally the textbook moment (came back from major surgery and was able to make his 8th pro bowl, his 7th nfl top 100, made the all decade team, and finished 3rd place in the all-pro vote). 2021 was such a good story coming back from that surgery and finishing with all of those accolades and praise.

Would have been nice for him to ride out into the sunset on a high note.

why do we continue doing this? Tyron is like a car that is running on rims and sparks are flying, smoke is coming off.the rims..the dude is done. Memo 2 Jerry.. " for all that is scared, have mercy on the guy, don't do this. Have mercy on the team and the fans. This is getting sad now. Let him ride off into the sunset. Draft another decent tackle. This more about doing right by the person, the team, and the fans, than it is about salary cap $. "
He can still be a very good swing tackle, he is not a liability when he plays.

And we did draft a tackle, last year.

We dont have enough picks to draft a new OT, new RB, new WR, new CB, new LB, and a young QB all this year.

Redo Tyron's deal, pick up a couple of million on the cap, and if he has to fill in at either LT or RT due to an injury this year it will be more than worth it to have him on the roster along with Peters as well. Like I said, you just cant go with rookies at all of these positions.

This description might be accurate to describe late '22 when he's out of position at right tackle, with only a couple weeks to prep.

Switching sides is like changing positions, sometimes even more challenging.

He graded out at 91.4 PFF..elite pro bowl level in 2021 w/738 snaps. Even a step or 1.5 steps down from that would make him worth keeping around. Agree w/his injury history: total wild card.

Is Flozell available? He’s probably more durable at this point…

Yea, if he’s truly healthy I’d put him back at LT and bump Tyler to LG where I think he’ll be better.

Granted, you gotta have a solid swing OT to cover yourself.

Oh a pay cut? LOL

What kind of a pay cut? from 13-10 million? From 13-5 million?

Freeing up 13 million for a guy that probably wont play is the better move. That little thing called salary cap management is important.

I would think Tyron would want to retire wealthy and save whats left of his Lumbar Spine as I am awaiting endoscopic decompression surgery from the abuse I gave my back playing sports.

Disagree Ray. He's more like my old Challenger 340 T/A. When it ran it ran like a cat with its tail on fire but it stayed broke with something all the time.

I think he's got some more miles on him and possibly really good miles. He's young for the most part compared to other great tackles. Re-structure him. He's still got really good talent ! Good leg movement, great use of hand strength.

If Tyron wants a championship he should get himself cut and go to a contender.
Do the Ware.
