Maybe this year they will not fill out the roster to 90, if they expect the drafted players to sign quickly. Therefore only need to bring in 5 more players.

What you end up with is technically called a TE, but in actual game day usage is a lot more like a WR.

Isaiah Likely... listed at 6-4, 245... is the best comp that comes to mind. Found this quote on the Ravens site:

When the Ravens drafted Likely, Head Coach John Harbaugh wasn't yet sure whether he would be a wide receiver or tight end. "It's not like an obvious position fit; he's just a playmaker-type guy," Harbaugh said at the time. Likely has made that come to fruition. He tells people his position is "chess piece." TEs all over the nfl will line up in a wr spot. But the guys we are talking about are not WRs. Those are situational matchups.

Here's what I think is the tipping point in our perspectives here. We don't disagree on the facts. We don't even disagree that the player is likely to be listed as a TE. We don't even (appear to) disagree that the player is likely to almost never line up as a blocker with blocking responsibilities once he would ever get into a regular season game.

What we disagree on then?

The relevance of the label "tight end" to the expected responsibilities on the field.

I maintain and doubt you'll push back on the assertion that this player will only ever be on the field primarily to catch passes, regardless of where he is aligned when the center snaps the ball. The most blocking he will ever do is the same as the most blocking CeeDee will ever do... down field against DBs and LBs.

TEINO... tight end in name only... in terms of responsibilities, he will be a wide receiver.

They are going to invite a number of players to rookie minicamp in order to have full practices. They might be keeping an open roster spot in case one of them impresses; or they might be signing another veteran soon.
