Perseverance could wind up making Windsor’s Arjen Colquhoun a selection in this year’s NFL Draft.

A Michigan State University cornerback, Colquhoun could be a late-round pick in the seven-round NFL Draft, which began Thursday and finishes Saturday.

“I always thought I might get drafted one day,” said Colquhoun, who is a Herman high school product. “It’s been my goal since I began playing football. It would kind of be a dream come true.”

The 23-year-old Colquhoun battled injuries for much of his first four seasons with the Spartans as he struggled to find a starting spot in the lineup.

“I tore my elbow my first year and the next year I tore the labrum,” Colquhoun said. “I was out a year and a half and guys (from the same recruiting class) had played a whole season on me.”

After the 2014 season, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound Colquhoun considered calling it a career and coming home.

“I was kind of frustrated with all the injuries,” said Colquhoun, who is majoring in criminal justice. “I just wanted to play football. I thought about going home. I decided not to and stick it out and finish with a great degree.”

Things finally came together for Colquhoun in his final season. When Vayante Copeland went down with an injury, Colquhoun stepped in and recorded a career-high 45 tackles in 14 games and the led the Spartans with 10 pass breakups, which put him seventh in the Big Ten Conference. He also tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and had two interceptions.

“It’s kind of crazy how everything pans out,” Colquhoun said.

At Michigan State’s Pro Day, Colquhoun posted a vertical jump of 37 inches, a broad jump of 10 feet and one inch while running the 20-yard shuttle in 4.16 seconds and posting a time of 4.55 in his 40-yard dash.

“The crazy thing is I’ve always wanted to play in the NFL, and I knew Notre Dame would put me in a position to go to the NFL,” Brown said. “But it seemed like it wasn’t until the beginning of my junior year that it was a real possibility.

“I didn’t start off the best in my career. I had that one catch that everyone always talks about (against Oklahoma), but I had a lot of struggles. I really did, as far as dropping the ball and having confidence.

“I feel like when I really started to gain confidence in myself, that’s when my game evolved.”

He went from two catches for 56 yards his freshman season to 15 for 209 and a TD as a sophomore to 39 for 548 and a TD in 2014 to 48 for 597 and four touchdowns in 2015.

Brown’s game figures to translate better to the next level, where the hashes are only 18 feet, six inches apart as opposed to 40 feet apart in college. Since he generally lined up on the short side of the field, Brown didn’t have as much room to operate as he will when the short side and wide side are decidedly less pronounced.

“That was one of the fun things about the Shrine Game week experience,” he said. “There was a lot of space out there, and I feel like I utilized that space as well.”

Caleb Azubike surprised a lot of people on National Signing Day when he spurned some big time college football programs signing with Vanderbilt in 2012. The Nashville native felt at home just down the street on West End with James Franklin and became a fixture of the Commodore defense the next four seasons.

Azubike set a record for most minutes played by a true freshman at Vandy. In his first year he recorded 4 1/2 sacks in Nashville and was a big reason the Dores defeated Tennessee his first two years at Vanderbilt.

When Franklin left to go to Penn State Azubike switched from linebacker to defensive end when new coach Derek Mason brought the 3-4 to Vandy. Injuries have prevented him from playing in every game the last three years but he was named to the All-SEC Preseason team coming into his senior year.

Unfortunately a broken jaw kept him out of three games after he sustained the injury against South Carolina in October. The Nigerian defensive end finished the season strong and had two sacks in a win over Kentucky in November.

If Azubike can put it together and stay healthy he could be a steal in the 2016 NFL Draft. Currently he is projected to be a late round selection or undrafted free agent. Azubike will have Vanderbilt’s Pro Day and private workouts to improve his draft stock. At 6’4 270 pounds he has the build the NFL looks for in a linebacker. If he can land on an NFL team I would imagine he could stick around and play on special teams until he gets a look at linebacker.

This player was a dark horse for me. He was miscast in a 3-4. He's much better suited for a 4-3.

I like the Brown signing. King sounds intriguing.

To be honest, those are the only guys I've actually heard of. Hopefully one of these guys surprises the team in camp. Always happens.

Brown is going to have a very hard time sticking. He never played special teams at Notre Dame, and unless he can do it in Dallas, he has no chance.

Eli told that to SD as well (too small of a market, etc.) and HAD to swap for Rivers. Funny the narrative changes as we go on:D

I really like the Eagan kid. He's one of those who gets the absolute most out of his physical ability. He may not be enough of an athlete to play in the NFL, but I like him.

Here are his YouTube highlights. Dude is king of the ole dead-leg move.

Yes he does. He was an UDFA. He counts.

This crop is very underwhelming though, I agree

What I mean is that signing doesn't demonstrate good scouting, everyone knew how good Collins was.

You still have to be able to seal the deal. Jerry still had to persuade Collins to sign. You're expecting quite a lot if you think Dallas should be able to sign quality UDFAs every year. They still are one of the best at finding UDFA talent.
