did anyone watch the hamburg v bremen uefa cup semi final second leg last night? that is one of the most bizarre things i've ever seen. a scrunched up ball of paper that someone had thrown on to the pitch ended up costing hamburg the tie.

I caught a little bit of it. What is the dif between UEFA Champions and UEFA Cup. Is the cup the equivelant to the NIT in college BBALL?

basically the top teams are in the champions league, then the teams that finished a wee bit lower go into the uefa cup. for example in scotland the european qualification this season looks like

1st in league = champions league
2nd in league = champions league
3rd in league = uefa cup
4th in league = uefa cup
scottish cup winners = uefa cup

^My before and after game antics will be much the same to be honest.

During the game however, that will be different. I'll be there and hopefully going wild, this is an absolutely huge game.

unless we're somehow 3 up i really cant see me enjoying the game at all. its going to be so tense, was getting nervous in work and watching the clock to see how long to kick off lol
i cant make up my mind, i'm mostly confident but then i start dreading the worst. glad mics out though, loovens is far more commanding at the back. wouldn't be starting with venegoor. i'd have pushed mcgeady up or risked wee shaun as i think pace and movement is going to bother your defence a lot more than an aerial threat. hoping papac doesn't make it because at the risk of saying something that comes back to bite me daily and whitaker at full back sounds quite fun to me. anyway bud i hope you get over the dissapointment by dinner time and it doesn't spoil your day too much ;)

I still dont get how a team that finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th can win the CHAMPIONS league. It should be an exclusive competition for CHAMPIONS....just like the old days of the European Cup.

A little nervous right about now, getting ready to go but man.....HUGE game right here.

I'm always confident heading to the game, then I see it kicking off and and confidence goes out the window. These games are too unpredictable to be confident about.

i agree, unfortunately money talks these days. in saying that the competition is definately more exciting for the inclusion of teams like barca, liverpool, juve etc over your rosenborgs or skonto rigas.

one of my favourite sports quotes is jock stein regarding these games. when getting interviewed before an old firm game alongside the rangers manager at the time, cant remember who it was, the reporter finished the interview by asking "well gentleman can i get your predictions for saturday?" stein waited until the rangers manager had predicted a 2-0 victory for rangers before saying "only a fool would try to predict the result of an old firm game"

and yes feeling very nervous just now. i can never work out whether i love or hate the build up to these games, i think a bit of both :D

thought the ref was poor yesterday, we should have had two penalties in the first half. me and the bhoys i was watching it with resigned ourselves to it after about two minutes when we never got a free kick on the edge of the box and then hartley got booked seconds later when he had clearly won the ball. in saying that he also failed to send big loovens off and the reason that we are trailing in the league has more to do with the fact we've only won twice away from home since the turn of the year.

Two penalties? none of them were even close to being penalties. McDonald was taking a shot and he kicked Whittaker, then fell over....that's not a penalty (as the pundits all said) and the second "claim" I don't even remember so that say's it all lol.

i've not seen any of it since saturday watching it live but my feeling at the time was we should have had two penalties. if i remember correctly scott booth claimed in commentary that the whitaker on skippy he had "seen them given" the other claim was early on where i felt boughera pulled mcdonald to the ground, the replay clearly showed him pulling his shirt and then landing on top of him but the referee gave the free kick to rangers. at the end of the day it shouldn't have mattered, we had more than enough possession to win but we weren't good enough on the day and only managed to force alexander into one easy save and one cleared off the line. that simply is not good enough when you're playing against christian dailly, david weir and steven whitaker and at the moment it looks like it is going to cost us dearly unless you slip up somewhere.

edit: heres the link first thing in is the penalty claim i was talking about http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/8042878.stm

I wouldn't even call that 50/50 if I'm being honest, McDonald's shooting leg kicked Whittaker...even John Hartson said it wasn't a penalty. The second one, I didn't even know anybody claimed penalty for that. I thought at most a corner would be claimed but even then, McDonald knocked the ball out of play himself. Bougherra stuck with him, but he never made any contact until after McDonald had slipped.

Defending well is what we do, we let you play around the midfield all day but when it got advanced there was no real danger. The only great chance was the header off the line really.

reminded me of the games with burns in charge where you soaked up the pressure and hit us on the break. all in all not an enjoyable day for me.
