He's a black belt under the Nogueira Brothers, and they don't just hand out belts like its candy.
You're partially right.
JDS is only a brown belt under the Nogueiras. However, you are right in the sense that they are notoriously stingy when it comes to handing out black belts, and you really have to earn your stripes to get one from them. Put Dos Santos in just about any other camp, he's a black belt by now.
Also, for those who overlooked his win over Roy Nelson, and aren't impressed with him because he doesn't "look the part", don't judge a book by it's cover. Roy Nelson is a very good fighter, with a good ground game and solid Jiu Jitsu. He's no slouch whatsoever.
In terms of predicting, I think Velasquez is able to beat Dos Santos. JDS has never faced a wrestler like Velasquez, and has been put on his back outside of the UFC by lesser grapplers. I expect a five round takedown and top position clinic by Velasquez and a decision win. Cain has a granite chin, and can take a punch (Cheick Kongo teed off on him and would have dropped anyone else with his punches, Velasquez shrugged them off), however he's smart enough to know that standing with Dos Santos isn't smart strategy.
On top of things, JDS' jiu jitsu is built to work submissions off top control. He's not a guy who has a high repitore of submissions off his back, or in defense. Certain fighters, like Fabricio Werdum and Jacare, are efficient with subs off their back. JDS isn't one who is, and that's where he's going to spend a large majority of the fight with Velasquez, fighting off his back.
I think Velasquez is going to be a tough win for anyone. He's got great wrestling, is nearly impossible to take down and keep down. He can take a punch and dish them out just as well. He's got good submission defense and a solid skillset there himself (although we've never got to see it in use).
It's going to be a nice fight, but I got Velasquez winning by decisive decision.
Also, as for Diego, the biggest mistake he ever made was leaving Greg Jackson's camp to begin with. Jackson made him a much better fighter, and he never looked the same in his two plus years he spent outside of there. The Sanchez we saw at UFC 121 was the one who plowed through the competition on The Ultimate Fighter 1. Part of that reason? Greg Jackson.
Jake Sheids needs one more fight in the UFC before he should get a title shot. Put him in there with Jon Fitch, and give the winner the shot. It may not be the most stylistically enjoyable fight, but it's the one that makes the most sense. Fitch has long been considered the #2 WW in the UFC, and if Shields can beat him, there's no dispute he deserves the shot. His win over Kampmann (which was the right decision by the judges) was inconclusive.
