Maybe he can't cover. But I don't think anybody thought he would run 4.24 unofficial or otherwise. With those physical traits, someone is going to think they can coach him up. I will say this, who ever takes him, will have a lot to work with.

It doesn't really matter what he does a the combine. Those that hate him will hate him. Those that like him will like him. Those that love him will want to have his baby.

I'm not a Mays fan, but I think a team could certainly do worse than picking him in the first.

Somebody should have taken Mays and turned him into a WR a long time ago. 6'3" 230 lbs with 4.2 speed?

This kid is clearly playing the wrong position.

wow! Mays with a 4.24
My guess is that the number is unofficial and he will end up still being a blazing 4.3 something. Cutting .15 off your best time is almost impossible. In either case, 4.3ish is really fast for anyone...and especially for a guy his size.

He doesn't have natural hands, probably the reason he ended up on D. I also don't think he was born 6'3 230lbs! ;)

Wow. That's no good

it's not amazing, but it's not terrible. He is a safety after all, not a CB

Yeah, that's fine for a safety. Just with his size and his play, I think people were expecting 4.4.

But he's so natural as a cover guy or defensive back. It's a lot easier to teach a guy to run a pattern and catch a deep ball then it is to teach him how to cover. At 6-3 and speed like that, if he were a WR, he would still make a team. I honestly don't know if he can make a team as a Safety in the NFL. He just doesn't have the ability to cover players and he is a horrible form tackler. I guess we'll see.

4.53 for a ball-hawking safety with great instincts is plenty good. No worries.

Sounds like he bumped it up to a 4.44 anyway...nice.

Exactly. Just expected something a bit lower. Not a concern for me at all, as he remains the guy that I want in the 1st rd. If we have to move up a bit, so be it.

Of course he'll make a team at safety. I don't think there's anything easy about teaching a kid to play WR if he doesn't have natural hands, otherwise a failed CB could just switch to WR.

I'm sure in HS and lower levels he played some receiver since he was probably, even then, big and fast. So that he ended up being a safety at the next level makes me think it was more natural for him.

I grew up "the tall kid", I was 6'6" by senior year of high school and everyone assumed I should play center when I was more natural on the perimeter. No matter how much they tried, I wasn't the type of guy that enjoyed posting up and backing a guy down, I preferred to get the ball in space and face the basket. But I joined the team, and of course I played center because I was the tallest but by the end of my time there, they were running me off screens for the 3.

My point is, just because he's big and fast doesn't mean he can play WR.

My thought on Mays is this. We took Kevin Burnett in the 2nd round. KB is 6'3" 239. Mays could play ILB next to James. Donnie Edwards played it for Wade in SD. Day one he could replace Carp in the nickle.

I'm not a Mays homer. I do recognize talent. Is he a ball hawk, no. I will like to see the position drills. Is he tight in the hip. Does he have short area quickness. Can he flip, turn and drive. I am concerned about his lack of INT. Again, given the right scheme - can he make plays. I don't know, but the kid has an awful lot of talent.

Earl Thomas' 2nd time was 4.44, more like it. And he took his time setting up, obviously knew he could do better than a 4.5

Well everyone that hates him won't have to worry, he won't be there when we pick.

It's funny considering all the comparisons to Roy he gets cause everyone has big safety phobia now, I don't think Roy ever ran no 4.24.

People need to stop with this nonsense.

Roy made a ton of plays in college and his first few years in the NFL, made a ton of plays vs the run, pass, special teams, blitzing etc etc. he was a quality football player.

Taylor Mays has been basically invisible on the football field his entire career at USC.

My point wasn't to dig at Roy, for years here, even when people soured on him, Roy was one of the best playmakers on the team. For better or worse.

Like I said, if you hate him, nothing at the combine will change your mind.
