Dane Brugler’s thoughts on Sam Williams:

"A three-year starter at Ole Miss, Williams was a hybrid boundary end (two and three point) in defensive coordinator Chris Partridge’s 3-3-5 base scheme, lining primarily in the 4i-technique. He turned his flashes into more consistent production as a senior, breaking the single-season school record with 12.5 sacks, which ranked top-five in the FBS in 2021. Although he needs better setup and countering skills mid-rush, Williams creates a surge with his hard-charging athleticism and violent hands. In the run game, he has a reliable motor but struggles to control the point because of a faulty anchor and tall pads. Overall, Williams must improve his discipline to be a more consistent edge-setter and rusher, but he has the upfield acceleration and attacking mentality to affect the game as a quarterback hunter. He is an exciting pass rush prospect in subpackages with potential to be more."
I just, again, disagree on his viability vs the run. I think he was totally miscast in that ridiculous defense they ran.

He was essentially playing a 3-4 end but worse bc there wasn't actually a 4th lb....lol That is why he was schematically always maintaining contain.

He certainly can improve in a lot of areas but he is NOT a one trick pony, even if that trick will be among the best in the league IMO.

the problem with the pick isnt the player but when we drafted him. He was projected a 3rd or 4th round pick. It was an overreach for another project player.

Did Dallas even draft a day 1 starter?

That’s BS. That is not a consensus. Rather one two guys opinions compared to everyone else.

but you can get all bothered about the pick if you like. If you take the time to study the player, he can rush the passer with upside. It was the bottom of the 2nd round? What did you expect?

Like any other rookie, De Williams will be dutifully tested in the practices and TC before his starting reps are to be rewarded. He's already been proven to be exceptional in his knack for pass pressure and sacks. What he will also be obliged to prove is that he's able to pass muster as a run stopper. If he's unable to prove himself in run coverage, there would be no shame in being limited to rotational work in the meantime. Time is on his side to develop the ability to do it with Dan Quinn being charged with his development. It's a goal for Williams to improve his work vs. the run. He'll be tested first, though.
