Has this been mentioned at all? How come we didn't tender him @ $2 million (with a 2nd round tender) and if another team signs him, we had the right to match and if we didn't, then would be receiving a 2nd pick in the process....

I love Bailey, but this would have seemed to make more sense. Am I missing something?

I think someone said this way was cheaper

This is only a small discrepancy, but if his 2014 + 2015 base salaries ($900k + $1.7m) are guaranteed, per Spotrac, and the signing bonus is $4m, that would put the guaranteed figure at $6.6m, right? Where did the $7.5m figure come from? Am I missing something?

I think the rest may be guaranteed money in the third year against injury. But just a guess.

His 2014 salary is fully guaranteed. His entire 2015 salary ($1.7 million) and $900,000 of his 2016 salary (which is $2.5 million) are guaranteed ONLY for injury before the fifth day of those particular seasons.

In other words, he is actually guaranteed only $4.9 million as of today. If he isn't injured and he starts missing too many kicks or we just want to save cap room, we could cut him before the fifth day of the 2015 league year and wouldn't have to pay him a penny more than $4.9 million.

If he's on the roster on the fifth day of the 2015 league year, then he's actually guaranteed $6.6 million. If he isn't injured and he starts missing too many kicks or we just want to save cap room, we could cut him before the fifth day of the 2016 league year without paying him anything more.

If he's on the roster on the fifth day of the 2016 league year -- or if he suffers a career-ending injury before that day -- then and only then would be guaranteed to get the full $7.5 million that is "guaranteed."

Thanks Adam - much appreciated on clarifying these salary cap/contract things. Spotrac should update Bailey's page to reflect that info about his 2015 base salary.

It's like the Romo contract where $55m was the reported guaranteed number, but he has to be on the roster on the 3rd league day of 2014 and 2015 to get $15m of that (which is almost certain to happen). And I think Bailey would really have to fall off a cliff to not get his roster bonuses (especially his 2015 one).

And the cap has remained flat since returning in 2011.

When the cap really starts growing again, which Stephen Jones expects to be 2016, it will make it easier to have big contracts.

The 2014 cap is currently expected to be $126.3M, but it may go as high as $128M when things get finalized around a month from now.

So the cap is already starting to increase more than was originally expected in the early years of the new CBA.

Except it has increased. It increased $3m last year but only $600k the year before. That is with the artificial controls in place. Thos go away this year or next year. Revenues have unquestionably went up.

So you are saying it isn't the end of the world? Good because I haven't had a chance to stock up on supplies for my bunker.

I know.

I went over how the salary cap was increasing prior to the lockout ($7M per yr from '06-'09) and how it's been "flat" since returning in 2011 in post #190.

Another thing everyone needs to keep in mind is that the salary cap has been flat since it's return in 2011.

It was growing by $7M per season from 2006 ($102M) to 2009 ($123M) prior to the uncapped 2010 season.

That's a $21M increase in cap space over four seasons.

The cap came back in 2011 ($120M), barely moved in 2012 ($120.6M) and increased $2.4M in 2013 ($123M).

Teams could also "borrow" up to $3M from future caps in 2011 and up to $1.5M in 2012 (the "borrowed space will be repaid from 2014-17 however a team desires).

The 2014 unadjusted cap is currently estimated at $126.3M, an increase of $3.3M, but it may end up as high as $128M per NFP.
That's a $6.3M to $8M increase in cap space over four seasons and Dallas had to endure the Mara penalty ($10M divided over 2 yrs) the past two seasons as well.

The cap has actually gone up more than originally expected in '13 and '14, but a real increase is being anticipated in 2016.

The term "flat cap" doesn't mean the salary cap isn't increasing, it means the increases are minimal compared to what we saw prior to the lockout.

I also mentioned that the cap increased more than in expected in 2013 and 2014.

But the increases are still miniscule compared to what we saw before the uncapped season and the Lockout.

I think so, we have our kicker wrapped up for the next six years and we can move on to another problem
