Upgrades over Jarwin/Schultz?

Who would you like to see starting at TE when the season opens in September?

You don't just give players a starting job. You make them earn it every season.

In a perfect world yes, but we don’t have resources like that.

no one is making Amari Cooper earn his WR1.

I understand what you mean it just doesn’t make practical sense if you are implying spending a pick on a player.

If you want Shultz and Jarwin to battle it out then I can get on board with that!

I would understand not taking Pitts if there was an elite defensive player at 10.
Unfortunately there is none in this draft class.
I would gladly take a blue chip DT if there was one.But if there was one he wouldn't drop to 10 anyway.

Thank you. Yes this is one of the points that I wanted to make, but I didn't want my post to go long and turn into a manifesto. :)

There are no Chase Youngs, Jeff Okudahs or even Isaiah Simmons in this draft (Micah Parsons isn't it). If Dallas picks a defensive player at 10, that player could very well be the first defensive player off the board - and still wouldn't be in the same class as any of those players.

I do think that reaching for need at 10 would be foolish.

Regardless though, this isn't a draft thread. No love for Zach Ertz? What about if he can be had on a 1-year "show me" contract? With only 36 catches and one touchdown in 2020, I don't think he's going to be commanding anything enormous once he hits the street.

TE is fine as long as Jarwin comes back healthy.

Is Zach Ertz really all that much better at this point than say Jarwin or Schultz when you factor in his salary. He's going to get a decent deal from someone.

I know that some here really like Jarwin and Schultz, but the reality is that Jarwin is coming off a serious knee injury and Schultz, while serviceable, will never be an All-Pro.

I believe that Dallas needs to upgrade the TE position this offseason and frankly there hasn’t been a better crop, not just in the draft but in free agency, for as long as I can remember.

Any of these players would be an upgrade. Which one do you like? I’m listing them in my order of preference.

Zack Ertz: (likely to be released or trade)
We know that good tight ends routinely play into their late 30’s and you don’t go from breaking Witten’s single season catch record to a stiff overnight. Suffered from poor QB play but I think he’d shine in Dallas.

Kyle Pitts: (draft)
I know people either love or hate this player but he’s 6’6, blocks like a tight end but runs like a receiver. He has great hands and speed too. Someone needs to help me with the hate; this guy could be the league’s next great tight end. Is it just the idea of picking one so high?

Jonnu Smith: (free agent)
Let’s see if he makes it to free agency but Jonnu Smith had a great year last year even though his stats don’t reflect it. He’s more like a wide receiver and has speed but he can block too. I think if you put Jonnu in Dallas he is a monster tight end and catches 10 touchdowns.

Hunter Henry: (free agent)
Make a lot of cash last season on the franchise tag but then didn’t produce that well. But he has the physical talent and I think suffered under lack of innovation.

Here are some other notables: Trey Burton (Mr. Philly Special), Tyler Eifert, Jake Butt, Pat Freiermuth (has never dropped a pass in the red zone)

Nope do NOT waste resources on TE when you have THREE WRS that can and need receptions..dalton and Jarwin are enough to hold down the position..we need defense defense defense no wasted cap space or draft stock on a TE..jeez people wake up our offense is loaded and has been out of balance for ling while..

time to look to defense to solidify and balance this team..
if DC decides to go offense at 10 because of a true BPA trade down OR take friggin QB not a skill player..we do NOT need another TE but with the QB position up in the air even at Bup go for it ..

It's a toss up between the 2 IMO. Jarwin's on his way back from last year's ACL injury. Both are proven pass-catchers. Jarwin is only the second TE in franchise history to catch 3 TD passes in one game. Last year, Schultz became only the 5th Cowboys TE to catch 50 passes in a season.

Dallas is fortunate to have them both. They've both improved immensely now that they have more playing time w/Witten gone.

I do agree the TE position is one that could be upgraded. I do not believe Schultz and Jarwin are as good as people are making them out to be. But we can't have stars at every position and the offense was not the problem last year, considering the injuries. Schultz and Jarwin should be fine.

However, if all the defensive gems are off the board and so is Penei Sewell, and Pitts falls into their laps, do they take him or pass? There are a lot of people who believe he is going to be a star in the NFL, a mismatch nightmare for most defenses. If you are the Joneses and your scouts are telling you this guy is going to be dominant in the NFL then how do you pass on him?

First I'm so sick of people here when a player has an injury that it's a "serious" injury making the implication that he'll never be the same so the Cowboys have to find a replacement. An ACL injury IS NOT something to make the Cowboys have to rush off and find a replacement. Jarwin was already working with the training staff working out less than 3 months after his surgery. So whatever you real agenda is on Jarwin, he's going to be good to go for off season workouts.

I have a few major issues to correct on this team but tight end is not one of them

Pitts is elite and a game changer. A hybrid TE/WR. A matchup nightmare.
And this is a weak defensive draft class.
Get elite talent when you can.

Draft defensive heavy in the other rounds and sign some key defensive free agents

This is the best way to go.

That being said.
Don't be shocked when the Eagles take Pitts with the 6th pick.

My hope is WR Chase and TE Pitts are gone before Philly picks at #6. Same with WR Smith.

Chase to the Jets, Smith to the Dolphins, Sewell to the Falcons, and Pitts to the Bengals. Eagles can’t unload Wentz and have to pass on Fields or trade down. That would be the nightmare scenario for Philly.

I love nightmare scenarios for philly.

You aren't going to have All Pros at every position, and in fact will never have more than a few All Pros at any time, so it doesn't make sense chasing that with a position that is well and capably manned at a level a somewhat below All Pro. That's especially true given that here are a lot of other positions that also are manned by players that will never be All Pro, and that do not fill their role nearly as well as Schultz & Jarwin can fill TE.

Also consider that with Cooper, Gallup, Lamb, and the two RBs. there are only so many passes to go around, and likely no TE on the Cowboys would get enough targets to be an All Pro anyway.

That said, obviously the team has to make an assessment on Jarwin's health. If they are confident he can return to normal, there is no need for changes at TE. Plus, Bell, has proven to be a strong blocker, and capable receiver in his limited opportunities, so that rounds out a very solid TE group.

If Sewell, Farley, Slater and Surtain are gone when Dallas is on the clock at ten and can't move down in the draft, I'd seriously think about selecting Kyle Pitts, the guy is a freak of nature!

None. Play Schultz/Jardin to their strengths. Draft another in day 3 to develop

I'm not sure I'm even for drafting one on Day 3. Pick up a couple of UDFAs and let them fight it out with McKeon for the third spot. Next year, we can look to add one in the draft.
