Safety has been a need for the Dallas Cowboys since potential Hall of Famer Darren Woodson retired in 2004. Year in and year out, fans are hopeful the team spends significant draft capital or dips their toes in spending above market-value for the position in free agency. Yet the Cowboys refuse to comply with their fan’s wishes.
Throughout the entire 2018 offseason it was thought the Cowboys would address their need at the position. The team flirted with Earl Thomas, or rather he flirted with them for over a year and former All-Pro Eric Berry was brought in for a visit. It also shouldn’t be forgotten the Cowboys passed on a pair of fan-favorite safeties in Delaware’s Nassir Adderley and Washington’s Taylor Rapp in the 2019 NFL draft. In the end though, no action was taken because Dallas feels extremely good about their in-house solution.
Ladies and gentleman, it’s time to appreciate Xavier Woods.
Sure it’s training camp, a prime time for false hopes and eternal promises. but the Cowboys think they have a potential budding superstar.
After sending their 2018 fifth-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for the right to select Woods in the sixth round of the 2017 draft, Woods has rewarded the team handsomely.

Woods has played in 30 out of a possible 32 games and has three interceptions to go along with 15 pass deflections and more than 70 tackles. Per Pro Football Focus, Woods ranked first among safeties with incompletions forced on 80 percent of the red-zone passes he defended.

For 2019, he intends to cement himself as one of the best in the game.

The Cowboys have a young and improving defense. From DeMarcus Lawrence on the edge to the studs at linebacker in Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch, they’ve emerged in the public eye.
Now it’s time for Xavier Woods turn to introduce himself.
