USC opponents starting field position

I keep seeing where our new kickoff specialist had a 55% touchback rate. I'm guessing another 10% went into the end zone but was returned by the opposing team. Does anyone know what the average starting field position was for USC?

Gimme a second. I think the starting field position is going to be hard to find.

USC had 39 kickoffs returned for 775 yards giving you an average of 19.87 yards per kickoff in 2008.

Of their opponents in 2008, only 3 teams had an overall season long average of less than 20 yards per return.

Here's part of a post I had in a Folk thread back in December.

I was looking at some other kickers stats and I hadn't ever noticed that Carolina has a kick off specialist with 24 TBs on the season. Every 3rd kick is a TB.

Thats pretty awesome for them. I know you would have to use a spot for a guy like that but hell I'd take a TB every game.

His KOs on average land at the 2-3 yard line and with a return average of 22, when teams do get a chance to take a KO, they usually start at the 25.

Folk usually hits the 10 and with an identical return average, opponents of Dallas usually start at the 32-33.

When you factor in that guys TBs as average starting position, the other teams usually starts at the 23. Just about 10 yards difference and with 5 kicks per game, were looking at half the field this guy adding on.

The 55% touchback rate is over 1 year. He was around 40% for his collegiate career. If he could match what the guy in Carolina does, it would be a HUGE boost in terms of field position.

I laughed when I saw the pick but after thinking about how much it could potentially help, I came around to it.

The way I've been thinking about it is that if it's roughly 30 - 50 yards in field position per game that we're saving, that comes out to 480 - 800 yards in a 16 game regular season.

That's the equivalent yardage from your 2nd or 3rd WR during the course of the season, definitely your 2nd TE, and quite possibly your 2nd and/or 3rd RB.

IMO, that hidden yardage is worth a roster spot.

I think it was a great pick-- more useful that spending a 5th on a *cough* fullback. :D

He has the leg to eventually be the best at TBs I believe.

I love Folk and I'm sure Jerry does as well, but you can't discount the fact that Jerry hates paying kickers a lot of money.

I have a feeling this new guy could ultimately be held over Folk's head down the line if Nick wants a huge contract in a few years.

As far as field position goes, let's not forget that USC's special teams basically is filled with 4 and 5 star 2nd and 3rd stringers, so your basic top flight athlete.

I guess someone could look up the starting opponents field position before Bueller started kicking off for comparison.

I ran some statistics in my blog. The league average last year for percentage of kickoffs that were touchbacks (not including Dallas' numbers) was 16%. The league average for the top 5 touchback rates last season was about 30%.

I estimate that if Buehler is about as good as advertised, the average starting field position would be around the 23 yard line, an outstanding improvement.

Folk was the only kickoff guy to not have a touchback last year. But, the *kickoff* coverage was pretty good last season, finishing 6th in kickoff return yards allowed with a TD return from the Cardinals. On the other hand, our punt coverage was lousy. Plus, with Buehler's skills to get down field and be an extra tackler (making essentially a 11 vs. 10 situation) and the new 2 man wedge rules, we could see an amazing improvement in the kickoffs in '09.

Responding to Adam's post. It didn't let me do the quote thing for some reason.

Not many teams have a 1st or 2nd TE doing 480-800 receiving yards a season. A 3rd WR doing 480-800 yards sounds more like a 2nd WR and at 800 that's a pretty darn nice 2nd WR.

I get your point on what Buelher can add to a team if he is as effective as the team thinks he can be. With those #'s over the course of a season he is actually a bit more valuable than the positional relations originally used.
