I think too much is being made of the kick and too little with the coverage. If we cover kickoffs better, we will be better. In the heyday of the 1990s, Eddie Murray could barely get the ball to the ten yard line, yet he had decent hang time and above all, we had great coverage players. Last year we had people like Bobby Carpenter and Justin Rogers as "aces".

Folk did horribly, but I think that had a lot to do with what he was told. Yes, he needed to get more air under the football and know how to place his kicks. Was getting that worth a fifth round choice? I am not so sure.

I remember when Ronnie Lott said that he loved to watch Roy Williams play because he played the game like he did.

I guess it's safe to say that "TEAM" + "0" = "Kickoff Reached Endzone"

Thank you DallasEast,

I didn't see any that went out of bounds. Would the stats show that?

I ran some statistics in my blog. The league average last year for percentage of kickoffs that were touchbacks (not including Dallas' numbers) was 16%. The league average for the top 5 touchback rates last season was about 30%.

I estimate that if Buehler is about as good as advertised, the average starting field position would be around the 23 yard line, an outstanding improvement.

So here's the question: how much FG accuracy should we be willing to trade for kickoff distance? I know the plan seems to be to keep two kickers, but it's worth thinking about, especially since Folk probably could yield something decent in trade.

The Cowboys kicked off 75 times last year. If they average, say, 5 yards better field position on each kickoff, that's 375 yards gained over the season. Depending on how you estimate the relationship between yards and points, that's a gain of around 30 points a year, or 2 points a game. That's huge.

Over the last 2 years, Folk has averaged 23 FG out of 26.5 attempts, and he hasn't missed an extra point. Those are great numbers, but if Buehler is a competent kicker, he wouldn't be giving up 30 points a year in missed FGs. It's more complicated than this, though, because some of those field goals are very high leverage, and a lot of end-of-half and -game offensie strategy depends on what you can expect from your kicker.

I don't know the answer, but I do believe that Folk is heavily overrated because the damage from his kickoffs isn't as obvious as the gain from his FGs. I also know that cutting/trading Folk would be an incredibly unpopular move that would get Jones ripped in the media any time the 'boys missed a FG and lost a close game. I'm curious to see how it plays out.

Each game's play-by-play summary did not indicate that USC was ever assessed any out-of-bounds penalties during any of Buehler's kickoff's. According to the summaries, each kickoff was followed by a return attempt, downed in the endzone or the ball was kicked through the endzone.

Like I've said before. This guy better have a 90-100% TouchBack rate to have this kind of luxury. I would hate to be the person who didn't make the team because we're carrying two kickers on the roster.

If I add that up right, 84 kickoffs total. 66 hit the endzone, 10 more landed inside the 4 yard line, and there were two screw ups in addition to an onside attempt. 45 touchbacks = 54% touchback rate.

Dallas had 74 kickoffs last season, which if Buehler doesn't improve his leg strength one little bit would potentially have resulted in 40 touchbacks based on his rate. Of course that is purely conjecture, but better than we had for 2008.

USC had 39 kickoffs returned for 775 yards giving you an average of 19.87 yards per kickoff in 2008.

Of their opponents in 2008, only 3 teams had an overall season long average of less than 20 yards per return.

From what I've seen on the clips, he doesn't just kick it long, he kicks it really high, too...

I think the guy could wind up being an asset for the Boys, but maybe that's just the Pollyanna in me coming out...
