And they never recovered. They did get what they deserved though, IIRC they were warned and still continued to pay players.

SMU is making strides now. They went to a bowl game last season. They are a long way from the days of the Pony Express but they have made major improvements.

Wouldn't USC have to forfeit the national championship game vs. OU? Why wouldn't OU have a valid claim as national champion then?
because they were cheating too?

Steve Smith- which one?
is this a serious question?

The one that went to USC genius. Y'know. The one who plays for that other team in our division who has blue uniforms. The one who just had 107 catches last year. The one who just went to the Pro Bowl.

The Bowl ban is huge no doubt. Assuming the parameters are true, the loss is 20 scholarships over 2 years, or five a year? To take them from 85 scholarship players to 80? That doesn’t seem like much of a penalty to me. That’s less than ten percent of their scholarship players. We know that means the lowest five guys on the charts, so of the forty guys on offense and forty on defense, just$c* loses 5 fourth-stringers. That’s supposed to be a penalty? That’s nothing.

I wish the penalty was worse, this is just so satisfying. Its felt as if us UCLA fans were trapped in some dimension where everyone but us UCLA fans were completely blind to the obvious cheating going on at U$C.

For so long now we’ve begged the NCAA to show some balls and come after them, for so long we’ve watched SC fans laugh as they skate away without punishment. Well finally it seems we can give a big SUCK IT to every stuck up, slimy, bandwagon riding USC fan, and man i’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thrilled

Growing up on the Westside, it has always felt a bit like its me against the world when it comes to the UCLA-SC rivalry, its been a tough decade for football, and I haven’t felt this good since 13-9, in fact, I feel better, because I think we’re finally going to end the great disparity in this rivalry

What's going to hit them hard is that teams can openly recruit their juniors and seniors. They can flat out woo them!! And those guys can transfer to any school without sitting out at all!!!!

Dude, that has the potential to really raid them. On a team like USC with 4 and 5 star recruits sitting the pine, they could lose a ton of depth and have very few scholarships to replace them. And if they do that and tank for a couple of seasons the coach is totally unproven as a winner so they'll no longer have the Pete Carroll championship glow to recruit with.

They got a lot more than they deserved.

They got to be the example for everyone else.

EVERY competitive team was paying players. Plenty of teams have been since and gotten nothing more than slaps on the wrist.

The NCAA will never again punish a program like they did SMU.

Too bad that players who are already on the team aren't free to transfer to a clean program (without having to sit out a year).

Coaches can break the rules and move on to another job for more money, basically excaping consequences.

Seems only fair that players, most of whom rarely have much to do with violations, have a chance to transfer without penalty too.

I know you're slow, so I'll try to lay this out exactly how wrong you are.

I was thinking and I realized that none of the skill position guys from USC have made it big in the pros. None of the WRs; White is pretty much gone; Bush is OK and no more; Leinart is still trying to make it as a starter. Actually has anyone from the 2004-2005 USC team been to the Pro Bowl?
This was your first post. You said none of the "skill position guys" from USC in 2004-2005 have made it "big" in the pros. Then asked if any have made the Pro Bowl. One has. Steve Smith.

And out of the "skill position players" on that team you actually have 4 NFL starters. Leinart, Cassell, Bush and Smith. If you think that's somehow lacking, you got more issues than I thought. How many skill position players from UT's championship team are NFL starters?

Vince Young
Jamaal Charles

Obviously Young was stuck behind Kerry Collins until the middle of this past season. Leinart was stuck behind future HOFer Kurt Warner.

Jamaal Charles finished the season as the starter in KC, but is going to face competition from Thomas Jones this season, and I'm guessing Jones will probably be the starter.

So yeah, 4 skill position players from one college team who are NFL starters ain't bad.

I know it hurts because they beat Notre Dame 41-10 that year. Oh, by the way... How many skill position players from ND in 04-05 are NFL starters or have made a pro bowl?

The juniors and seniors ARE eligible to transfer without sitting out. And it was players like Reggie Bush who screwed them more so than coaches.

poor peppie did I hit a nerve? Bush- supposedly the player of the century according to USC PR grunts=has not exactly set the world on fire has he?

Leinart- maybe he finally starts this year but what odds that he comes close to Warner?

White? nuff said.

Smith has had one year of being really good. That is all. So once again I ask you peppie- after all the talk about that supposed monster team of 2004-2005 (ND did not do too bad with the 2005 squad, if you can remember...)
Just how many players from both sides of the ball have made the pro bowl?
