Vanilla

Have you read my first post in this thread?
Of course. It was very well written. Just a little over the top IMO. It happens every off season. People read the tea leaves, shake the crystal ball, and bang the drums to howl at the moon, over nothing. Thus I decided it would be more fun to lampoon it.

So I defined vanilla in the context it has been being used, predicted that the team would agree with the fans using it in that context, and had a real good pee this morning. I mean a real good pee. Think Tom Hanks in the girl's baseball movie kind of pee.

No, I did not give you the 1 star rating. I have not voted.

And you still think my main point was that the world "vanilla" is overused?

By the way, any way to see who voted for the 1-star?

How do you even vote? Is it a Mod-only thing?

No way to see. Zone Supporter feature.

I never said that was your main point. ;)

Wow, has this little word taken off. I haven't seen this much "vanilla" since those goombas at ExtremeSkins used it religiously a few preseasons ago.

"Vanilla" schemes, "vanilla" plays. It's all "vanilla".

Well, not everything. I haven't seen many people say "man, this defense will be so great when they stop using their vanilla plays".

Seems like "vanilla" is only popular when talking about a rather disappointing aspect.

Redzone?

Oh, the redzone plays have been vanilla. Don't worry about it.

What about the OL? Been a couple too many ugly plays by the OL.

Vanilla. No doubt about it.

Just a little self-serving to excuse poor play as being not a part of the normal game plan. Don't worry about the failures now because all the work that is supposed to go into the games now doesn't mean crap.

I don't buy it.

Even if the "vanilla" theory was true, it's true for both teams which makes execution the determining factor. Sorry if I don't like the idea of the Raiders executing better than Dallas. The Dallas Redzone offense looked pitiful again. Same story as last season and last game. Moved the ball a little bit but failed to do a damn thing once in the Redzone. Seriously, does anyone really think that the coaches and players are happy with consistent failure in an area that they failed at last season?

I don't.

I'll gladly admit that the team isn't showing their entire hand. No team does. But I highly doubt that teams go into these games without trying to establish something. I highly doubt that teams go into these games without a sense of purpose. Given the failures in the Redzone last year, I'd think a little success inside the 20 would rank a little high on the grocery list.

Halfway through the preseason for Dallas and there hasn't been an offensive TD, primarily because the Redzone offense has sucked.

Guess that's what "vanilla" is. Moving the ball efficiently until getting into the same area of the field that presented struggles last season.

That's "vanilla".

Definitely not time to panic but lets just hold back on dismissing everything as "vanilla".

man, don't you know that dallas is the only team to play vanilla and it's only the preseason and you're over reacting and you're a crybaby............:D

That's funny, because I can swear that I said the Raiders played very vanilla and so did Wade at his PC.

So once again the victim card just does not work.

The bland playcalling and lack of gameplanning overall doesnt bother me, that's what preseason is. We won't be seeing too many bootlegs from the 15 on 4th and 1 when the real games begin.

That being said, one thing that DOES really have me concerned is the O-Line because their job is to block, whether preseason or reguar season and they just arent doing a very good job of it. A vanilla speed rush was just going right around Columbo every play. Gurode and Davis were getting dominated by a basic bull rush. Kosier looks like he always has, pretty average with good feet but a lack of elite upper body strength. Oddly enough, the only lineman who looked like an NFL starter last night was Free.

Now, maybe they just don't care, but if that's the case I wish they would because Tony Romo got hit about 6 times last night and that is unacceptable. I'm not saying it's time to panic or anything, but I think chalking up piss poor blocking to just being a preseason phenomina is a bit of wishful thinking.

I agree with this.

I know a lot of people got all excited over the Cinci game when we went pass-pass-pass-field goal in the redzone and didn't run.

I didn't.

They had stuff they wanted to work on, they tried, it failed. They could have ran the ball if they were overly worried about trying to get a TD. That isn't to say they didn't want the 7; they just wanted to score the 7 in a specific manner. It didn't work. I think come regular season, you'd see at least 1 run there.

But like you, I saw the starting OL struggle... and despite whatever their game plan is heading into preseason games, I doubt it included the concept of seeing Tony react to pressure.

The sky isn't falling based on a second game in 4 days.....

But it is a little discomforting and something worth keeping an eye on.

i just like messing with people on here because it's fun. :D
but if the coaches are pissed about the execution, not losing a game that doesn't count, but basic football execution, then there is concern.

I find it a little hard to believe that anyone, including the coaches, believed we were going to play a late evening game on a Sunday, fly back to Dallas, have only walk through practices, have 13 injured players, and play a flawless game 4 days later.

I think they will be a lot more realistic than some of our fans are being.

Excuse me for putting on my rose colored glasses here but I have to believe that we are saving things for when it counts. Don't wanna be the preseason champs. Our redzone woes will all be gone soon. JG isn't paid to be a buffoon and neither is TRomo. We will be ok.:starspin

I don't think Wade expected flawless, but he was "clearly agitated" according to his post game. No coach wants to see poor execution, even Wade.

Hell, I get more agitated when my daughters are in the bathroom and I need to pee.

2 teenage girls.

People wonder why men pee outside. I don't.

The bottom line about our offense is that Jason Garrett uses shotgun entirely too much. He is not using the offense line to its strength by using the size of those guys firing off the ball eary in games. We need to establish a physical smash mouth identity by using all three backs to keep all of them fresh and healthy. This in turn will allow the play action pass to work. The delayed draws are effective at times but should not be over used. I have been saying for 3 years that Jason Garrett is our weak link.

The Hall of Fame redzone series reminded me of the plays that he has tendencies to call in real games.

Tony Romo and the rest of the Offense and NFL coaches in the know all disagree with you.

Congrats on your 3 year anniversary of wrong.

I think certain peoples gripes/concerns about the "vanilla" term is that vanilla should still work.

If you excute well even with "vanilla", it should still be good.
