From the time Byron Jones was drafted, Cowboys observers have wondered what role he might play in the defense? Would he be a corner? Would he be a safety?

Today, the coaching staff offered a strong hint of the role they see for Jones in 2015, and it’s probably bigger than even the most creative fan considered. In the practice’s first 15 minutes, when the offense and defense move through the day’s script of planned offensive and defensive plays, Jones lined up next to Sean Lee in the nickel as a “linebacker.”

I put the role in quotes because Jones was more of a big safety, the third in a 4-1-6 that featured three cornerbacks and three safeties. Jones played man-to-man in every play, shadowing Jason Witten whereever he went. This tipped that Jones might indeed play the coverage role that’s become necessary against modern flex tight ends like Jimmy Graham. Jones is big enough to ride the faster tight ends and fast enough to keep them in his back pocket.

Later in practice, Jones returned to the linebacker spot, playing inside with Anthony Hitchens, who spelled Sean Lee (more on him later). Most rookies get a short role to rush them onto the field, but Jones, who played exclusively at right corner the first two days, ran the secondary gamut today. He played on the right side early, but played on the left corner later. He also played a true cover two safety, playing a deep half with Jeff Heath.

Jones had his growing pains. He offered strong coverage on most plays but was shaken by James Hanna when he covered the tight end from the linebacker spot

It's good to see that the Cowboys think highly enough of Jones's intelligence to drill him in different roles. It's even better to see that he seems to be taking to it well. The more versatility that he shows, the better for the defense.

I don't know why my mind went here, but it reminds me a bit of when the Cowboys had Steve Scifres in camp in 1997 after drafting him in the third round. The Cowboys had him practice at literally every position on he line, as they said that he was intelligent enough to handle it.

He just lacked the talent to execute it.

Thankfully for the Cowboys, talent is the least of Jones's issues. He has the potential to be a real steal where they drafted him.

Did the author just "discover" the dime defense?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Man I hope they don't mess this guy's development up by having him move all over the field. They need to find a role for him and let him work at it.

Agreed. But this is the time to see if can handle it mentally.

Hilarious. This is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe he lined up over the DE or DT giving the perception of being a pseudo LB, but yeah, that's still just a Dime formation with an unorthodox alignment.

Early, early....early. But this and an observation of Claiborne also raising an eyebrow or two in good coverage and almost two interceptions; well, interesting.

On the other hand, maybe you could think of it like learning a second, (or third, etc) language... the younger (earlier) you learn, the easier it will be to retain and master it. If they're planning to use him in multiple spots along the D anyway, might as well start early.

Sounds like Romo is rusty to start. Missing guys in the flat and multiple INTs. Can't afford for him to take 2.5 games to get back in the swing of things like last year with 2 NFC East opponents to start.

Back obviously isn't a concern but being 35-36 is..

I think it is a little early to start worrying about him when he had next to no time with these guys last season and was the best QB in the league.

Good point, IMO the most important thing is that Jones is one of those guys like Frederick that is off the charts intelligent (by NFL standards). I've seen articles that say he already knows all the assignments for both CB positions and the FS position. Frederick wasn't overwhelmed by the transition to the NFL and his intelligence was part of that. Jones should have the same kind of quick adjustment.

It's a big dime or giant dime with the three safeties but it's still a dime. It is surprising to see Jones as the SS in the dime. I thought he play the FS role more although you can't really call them FS or SS.

It's about dang time that Dunbar's seeing time in the return game. Feel bad for the fortenberry kid. Hate to see injuries, but his biggest contribution to this team this tc may be as sacrificial lamb #2.
