Vela: Cornerback Gambit

I'll be interested to see what they do with the Flo situation.

I have to say I'm leaning toward hoping they resign him cause we know he's a good player and I'd really rather not take a risk with Tony Romo's blind side.

I'm pretty sure they tape all the practices. There is probably quite a bit of film on both Free and McQuistan.

Watching Free battle Ware in practice ought to give you a pretty good idea how he'd fare.

Ware is strong, Free is not, Ware probably got the better of Free every time

You might want to double check your facts on Free. He projects as a pretty good player and people who matter at camp thought he looked ready last year.

Ugoh wasnt rated that much better than stephen heyer, heyer played pretty decent for the skins too. The only thing free was lacking that ugoh and heyer had was opportunity.

I hope he gets that opportunity next year.

Free was decent -- he was ready to protect the passer but his run blocking was mediocre at best.

You can look at your draft guides all you want -- but the fact is that 32 teams passed on Heyer and Ugoh was picked 42nd overall. That tells me that real experts obviously had these guys miles apart.

And before you go saying "but look at what Heyer did" you need to look at what 100 all the other OTs picked after Ugoh did -- in most cases, not much.

What stunning insight. Ware is an All-Pro. He gets the better of most of the tackles he faces.

However, if Free went against him regularly in practice, you'd have a good idea of how he'd fare as a starter against the best in the league.

Yes, and free had an injury that scared teams from taking him higher. he should have gone somewhere in the second round.

and he is on the team now, where he was drafted doesnt matter now. Just like barber, canty, ratliff, crayton, romo, austin etc....It just doesnt matter. He is on the team and he has talent.

The same people that were speaking highly of romo, james and marion barber have said good things about what they saw from Doug free. I bet he is given the opportunity to play tackle next year and if he struggles mcquistan can move over there.

the giants cut their expensive old left tackle and it worked out okay for them. Different situation with diehl, but the principal is the same.

trust your draft, coaches and players.

Yeah, God knows where we'd be if we didn't have Bob's incredible insight into the game in order to guide us. :D

Thanks for stating the obvious.

:)

But srsly, I would be worried if Ware was getting dominated by Free, lol.

Back the point... somewhere in an article, Flozell said practicing against Ware the past three years has really helped him learn how to better handle speed rushers. He credited playing against Ware for making him a better player. One can only hope Free will benefit from it.

letting flo walk would be a mistake no matter how many times he false starts

I wondered how Flozell and Hudson got along? I guess I was under the impression that Houck liked him.

I do think that Houck's opinion will carry some weight. I think Garrett's will carry even more. And money talks the loudest.

Already writing Marten off after one year?

Nice.

We can't even give players 3 years....now we are barely giving them one year.

You folks remember the whole 2 years of revolving right tackle, the ones that ended in the great Rob "6th round" Petite as a starter?

No matter what you see in practice, you are going to see lots of overloads on the left side if trot a young guy out there...all day. Maybe Free/ugly Pat can handle it...maybe not, in any case there is a learning curve and they are going to f-up. Is that worse than Flo's false start /half...could be.

The thing that really worries me is that if they cant play LT, then you're going to see Davis out there and your going to see the TE blocking all day.

oh I see -- based on a decent 1st year training camp, we can anoint Free the next big thing at LT. But Marten stinks it up and only makes the team b/c of his draft status and we can't say anything bad about him.

Evaluation cuts both ways.

I am not anointing Free anywhere in my previous post in this thread.

There were plenty of people around here who thought he had a bright future for various reasons.

I guess it just goes to show you.

And the eyeball test works too.

It was easy to tell who the better tackle was last preseason if you bothered to watch the games.

I am concerned about Marten as well.

I havent. Marshetta has been posting Boylehearts writeups on various players and ive come to respect his reports. He essetially said that linemen coming out of BC lately have needed a lot of technical work and that Marten was no exception. I think Houck will do the guy some good and he will show signs of having had NFL coaching for a year this upcoming season as well.

Before we anoint it a "potential superbowl team", let's see it win a playoff game first.

We didn't win a playoff game with Flozell, I don't see where we've lost much if we don't win one without him.

Indeedy..............
