Vela: Part II: Should The Cowboys Take the Rusher or the Corner?

Good thread.

I like Ratliff at NT. Anyone consider the possibilty that he has excelled there because of his great quickness off the snap in beating the OC. That quickness won't be as useful going up against an OG or OT who's not snapping.

IDK Maybe we could use a 350lb NT. But I'm thinking this would be someone to spell Ratliff. Not exactly a role we'd look to fill with a top 10 pick.

I think Newman's had a good year. How about the play he made two snaps before he was beat on Thanksgiving?

If this Peterson kid would make a better FS than CB, maybe that's the ticket. I still see FS as are single greatest hole.

Maybe Newman is our next starting FS. I always felt he hit and tackled well for a CB and plenty of good CBs have made the switch late in their careers.

I've been crying for multiple OL pickes going back to the 2008 draft. Not a fan of going OL with a top 10 selection for two reasons....
Too many bust OL picks and it's the one unit I believe All Pro caliber players are not needed. And if picking top 10, I want a possible All Pro guy.

But I do want to see at least 3 OL selected.

I've had this argument in the past and bottom line is you gotta take the best player.

If the best Corner in this draft is Revis and the best Pass Rusher is Demarcus Ware than imo you gotta take another Demarcus Ware with the pick.

Nobody is really talking about Marcel Dareus but I think he would do a good job here.

Newman wouldn't make it through the preseason as a Safety. He is glass at corner.

Dumb comment.

If there's anyone that could transition to FS it would be Newman, but I don't want to take our best man-to-man coverage guy and have him not playing man-up 75% of the game.

wow i didnt realize how much the defense imploded that much. Two guys that absolutely need to get straight again are Jenkins and Spencer. As for the draft...I would rate a baw hawk FS as high as top CB or DE. Wasnt it just few months ago we were talking about how Dallas might have too much depth at pass rushers...now we are back to maybe taking one with first pick. This team is impossible to figure out.

Take whoever is the best player, the one most likely to make an impact regardless of the team he is on. Take the guy that will practice hard and play hard and not go out drinking every night as well.

Name me one successful 34 defense in the NFL that doesn't have a true, space eating NT?

There isn't one.. Ratliff is great because of his quickness yes, but he also has alot of strength. He would thrive at DE imo.

Not dumb at all imo. Newman is injured alot.. and you put him at a position where he's responsible for coming up and making plays in the run game more often and getting closer to the LOS.. its only logical to think he'd have even more injury problems.

After the experiment with Ball though, i'd much rather get a true safety who knows the ins and outs of the position and doesn't have to spend have the season trying to learn the nuances of the position. Not that it can't work and be successful, but its not as likely as just getting a safety.

I would like to move Leonard Davis to NT. Then you would have your 350lb NT to crush the center of the line.At least he could move straight ahead.

I'll take a playmaking corner or safety.

We all complain about our lack of turnovers, well how about we get playmakers that force turnovers?

The only one we have in our secondary is Jenkins.

Do we have two good edge rushers?

I agree we need a CB or S or both too though.

He could cover all day as a safety but the guy wouldn't hold up. It's not a dumb comment at all.

And Newman has been fantastic this year w/ Wade but he struggles with zone so much now.

We desperately need Safety help.

And hopefuly Akwasi can give us something but his hips just looks so bad on Special Teams that it doesn't give me much encouragement that the guy can turn and run.

But then again we play our safeties 30 yards downfield too.

Going mindlessly for straight BPA is just as dumb as mindlessly going for need.

you have to balance the two. bennett is a case of going for BPA and frankly we wasted a second round pick on a position where there was no need and did not look for good players at places like OL.

There very rarely is when any team picks one player who is so much better than anyone else available. you usually have 4-5 guys on your draft board that are pretty close to the same value. what you do then is look hard at them, balancing the best player you can get for a position of need.

Totally dont agree with this.

Which the above applies to. They needed another TE. They didnt HAVE to select one there, but he was the best TE available and the best player available overall.

But we had much, much stronger needs than a 2nd string TE who was going to be playing behind an extremely durable, future HOFer. Especially with a 2nd round pick.

If you needed a blocking TE you could find one easily later in the draft. Heck we got Phillips in the 6th and the drop off from Bennett to him is not all that great.

Agreed. Newman isn't a bad tackler for a CB but I hate the idea of him coming up in run support. He is slightly smaller than Ball, who is already getting bounced all over the place.

Double agreed. I'm really tired of this team taking guys who play one position and trying to convert them to something else. If you want a safety, draft a safety. If you want a WR, draft a friggin WR.

We've wasted way too much time trying to bang square pegs into round holes.

we will be top 5

Who knows but we'll definetely be 3-9.

This is the most important off-season since Parcells left.

We have to make the right coaching hire and we have to have an excellent draft where we are slotted.

The draft is such a crapshoot....

and it really doesnt matter what the front office does....because in the end...all fans have their favorite pick.....we pick BPA and some will complain it was a wasted pick....unless of course the starter gets injured.......we pick up for need and some will complain we reached for that player.

Im glad we picked up Dez....wasnt a need....but was no doubt BPA. I liked picking Bennett...even tho he hasnt done much....but thats because Witten has been injury free.

I hope we pick high....and stay there....we need some difference makers....safety...insideLB....OL...and even a running back because I would ship Barber out of town and Im not sold on Felix being a every down back.......

Look at Phillips. He can do a fine job at TE and where did we get him? Bennett was a wasted high pick. We could have gotten a backup TE at 4th rd or lower.
