Twitter: Video: Parcells coaching young Romo

Tony credited a few people to helping him. I think Payton was a bigger help than Parcells. I dont even know if we would have had Romo if not for Sean.
David Lee. Romo gave him the most credit of anyone from the Parcells era.

I believe we got Romo because of Payton, and Romo had a great career because Dallas did him right on that end.

Romo wasn't a complete unknown. He won the Walter Payton Award (best D-II player) twice. Most draft reports had him as a 6th round grade and some thought he might sneak into the 3rd round (there's always some draft report with a wacky grade on a player).

When we signed him as a UDFA, I was happy because I was surprised he wasn't drafted. Payton didn't start to rave about him until he was looking to sign with us and he had the Eastern Illinois connection. It wasn't like Payton had been watching Romo at Eastern Illinois and raved about him before the draft. If so, we would have drafted him.

Romo has admitted how his progress was really a big part of David Lee's work with him. As well as getting help from Testaverde for throwing mechanics (Testaverde had excellent throwing mechanics) and how to prepare. Payton was Romo's biggest fan in the organization when we already got him, but that means very little in the end. In fact, if Payton would have gotten his way and we started him in '03, it would have likely been a disaster and he would have never had the career he had.

And I like Payton. But, people completely overestimate his influence on Romo's career.

Gotta love Tony's smirk when Parcells called him frail. Not sure Parcells loved it though.
