Ben and Skin were dogging on him today. But like you said, OP, a believe a lot of it has to do with interactions. I don't like Scandrick because the 2 times I've met him he was grumpy and kind of a dick.

Met OScan (and Miles Austin) @ a Cowboys event in Tampa when he was a rookie.

Miles couldn't have been nicer.
Scandrick was a complete ******.

If you ever get to meet Staubach, he is the nicest and most engaging person in the world. The guy is amazing. I've met Randy White and Pearson, and they are the same way. Actually, OScan is the only guy that was kind of a dick.

Broaddus does his fair share of complaining about Doug Free, actually.

I know better than to stroll into this tarpit with you, but I do think that there's a schism between people who think you can win with players like Doug Free at RT and those who apparently think you cannot.
His Doug Free axe is now only a nub after all the grinding over the years.

Doug Free is the lynchpin of the OL. It is his veteran leadership and presence that allows the rest of the players on the line to shine the way that they do.

He may not be the best player on the OL. But he contributes in so many other ways.

Maybe you should consider that. Before kicking one of our veteran leaders to the curb in such a belittling manner. :(
Hogwash. Three All-Pro OLinemen don't need a leader. Leary does not need Free.

That leaves La'el Collins and Green as the only possible guys that need a leader, but they have the 3 All-Pros they can look up to.

While Free does look abysmal at times pass blocking and every position deserves to be routinely scrutinized for possible improvement, if you offer me his kind of production for a fourth round pick, I take it every single time.

Doug Free was really bad in the Vikings game.

The local media, especially the people that work for the team just won't criticize some players. Free is at the top of this list.

The radio guys will hint at Free being bad and guys like Brad Sham, Bryan Broaddus and Mickey will come unglued and start making all kinds of excuses or just totally deny it.

On the flip side the media will dog on some players repeatedly.

I assume it is due to personal interactions with the players.

They hated RoMc the day he arrived. My guess is that he was disrespectful to them.

Free on the other hand must give them gifts daily.

They asked Brad about Free's terrible game and not only would he not acknowledge it, but he started saying that Free was almost as good as Tyron.

I find it bizarre.

Unfortunately many many fans take their cues from these media guys in terms of what they think about players. Then those fans come here and repeat the narrative.

Same occurs in life be it politics/entertainment/products.... Sound bites don't always indicate the truth.... Appreciate your pointing this out...

Randy White is fantastic. Met him in Ft. Lauderdale, let me try on his SB XXII ring, could almost fit 2 fingers in it...LOL.
Troy was pretty good too, really liked his interaction with the kids. That was in 1992, before the season.

Emmitt was ok, that was in 92 also.

When Troy was at the Sawgrass Mills in Ft. Lauderdale at a card show, there also were 2 dolphins players. Troy Vincent and can't remember the other. There were 400 people, as I was lucky to be in the first group of 50 for Troy. But the Dolphins players had maybe 50 total....:muttley:...

This thread was not intended to be about how Free's ability per se.

I just wanted to discuss the media and how they often control the narrative. Anybody that spends much time watching "film" (All-22 video) knows that Free has a lot of problems and is not remotely close to being as good as Tyron. I'm certain the media guys know he is not that good, but they defend him anyway. The Cowboys media guys invented that nonsense about him being this great leader and now. A large contingent of fans blindly follow the media narrative like the Eloi lining up to be eaten by the Morlocks.

I've thought about this before, but when I heard Brad Sham say "well he's not quite as good as Tyron" I almost ran off the road with laughter.

I've noticed it because I obsess about everything OLine, but they probably do it with other players and I just have not paid attention.

As I said in the OP, there were media guys dogging on Rolando McClain the day he arrived. Mike Fisher in particular is obsessed with him.

The media also drove the narrative about Greg Hardy. They dogged on him so much that I thought certain that something drastic would be revealed after he departed but it turns out that all he did was challenge Garrett and knocked a clipboard out of the ST coaches hand. Nothing ever came out about him doing drugs while he was here or anything like that. Marinelli obviously loved him based on comments he made this off-season.

It does seem obvious that the local media has been told not to dog on Dez. The radio guys briefly mentioned his missed meetings a few times to guys like Broaddus, Mickey, etc. and they said "no comment". Even one of the radio guys said "I don't don't want to get into trouble" for bringing up this topic.

No question. Doesn't mean you can't upgrade and IMO that player is already on the roster.

NICK HAYDEN. The worst DT the world has ever seen. Only the Cowboys were dumb enough to employ him.

But then he got cut and didn't have much trouble getting signed elsewhere. Interesting...

He was cut within a month of training camp with the Browns.

Nick Hayden is an American football defensive end who is currently a free agent in the National Football League. He was selected by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Wisconsin. Wikipedia

Met Scandy once and he was actually pretty cool may have caught him on a good day lol. The only player I ever thought was a complete jerk that I met was Jay Rats. I had talked to him a few times at football camps and he was awesome but the last time which happened to be his last year here he was a complete butthead. I've gotten lucky and have gotten to meet quite a few players but my faves had to be Hayley, DWare, Woody, Novacek and Sean Lee. Of all of them Sean Lee was the coolest, he talked to us for a good 15 minutes at least. Very humble and down to earth guy.

Will never understand why almost everyone around here dismisses the idea of Collins at RT.

It's baffling...he played two years at LT against some of the most athletic pass rushers in the nation and did it damn well. I see no reason why he can't translate to RT in the pros.

Yes, he played LT in the SEC and many draft pubs had him rated as an NFL OT.

He might be better at Guard than at RT but that does not mean he can't play RT effectively. He only needs to be better than Doug Free. That's a low bar.

As a former reporter, I will testify to the perception that if the media like you, you will get the benefit of the doubt, unless it involves a story that MUST be told. But if you are a butthole you will not get the benefit of the doubt.
But this is human nature as all of us do the exact same thing. It is humanly impossible to treat everyone the same. It flies contrary to the nature of relationships.

Free is the only chink in the armour on that front line, I am sure defensive coordinators realize all the others are pro bowl talent(including Leary). It makes sense they will throw the kitchen sink at him each and every play. He is average until a elite bull rusher is placed in front of him, if Green was more talented I am sure he would be in the game. We are just going to have to shade him when we have a talented DE in front of him, during rush blocking I have very few issues with his play. There is no cavalry to the rescue that contains another pro bowl player in Dec 2016(Collins?). The Vikes had Griffen, Robison, and Hunter in front of him and normally Witten was there to shade.

JPP is going to be a struggle.

Green was really good at LT in the game that Tyron missed but unfortunately Green can't stay healthy.

Free is generally "good enough" but if Dak gets hurt or get strip-sacked resulting in a loss, it will likely be due to Free.

He lasted a grand total of a month and seven days with the Browns after getting signed in July.

He has been on the streets since the regular season began.

Even the talent poor Browns realized he was not a good player and dumped him.

He stuck around in Dallas for three years and started every single game. That is inexcusable.

It's more than just liking or not liking. If a guy's a good source of inside info and you write something he doesn't like, that source will very likely dry up. There's a very straightforward conflict of interest.
