I beg to differ. How has it taken steps backward exactly?

You can argue that innovations like the hit stick and passing cone aren't good for it, but that is an opinion and people like me, who LOVE the passing cone will not be convinced otherwise IMO.

Have you played next-gen Madden? I actually like Madden 07 (360), but it's far from perfect:

  • Because the game runs at a paltry 30 frames per second, it lacks the fluidity of the ps2/xbox Madden's;
  • The collision-detection is spotty at best(i.e. players simply pass thru one another way more often than they did in last-gen Madden's);
  • The game is seriously lacking in pre-snap options (no individual defensive player adjustments, no slide protection controls, no formation audibles, etc, etc.);
  • Players cannot be edited in any way;
  • Player interaction is extremely limited (i.e. if a defender engages a ball carrier, any other defenders who try to help out simply bounce off)
I read a preview of NCAA Football 08 (which uses the same engine as Madden) that stated they would be incorporating branching animations (which would allow true gang-tackling) and would be getting the game up to 60 fps this season. Hopefully, Madden will do the same.

I don't know if anyone's writing it off. I'm open to the possibility of buying it if they improve some things. It's probably the highest selling video game franchise of all time, no one's going to write it off.
