You can see in those clips he isn’t taking massive hits. He knew how to go down and minimize injury risk. It’s not a criticism
This is also his 10th year at this point. Emmitt used to get the ball 25-30 times a game sometimes close to 40. And he played every game.

Can anyone guess what is this?

23rd
30th
31st
32nd
26th

This is the team offensive ranking of Emmitt's teams his last five years in the league. What a difference maker, with his <4 yards per carry in that span.

And trust me, you really don't want to see the win-loss records of the teams Emmitt "carried" the last half of his career.
So I guess by that thought process, then Walter Payton was crap since he never won any championship and led the league in rushing only once in his career.....as for Barry Sanders, he must be a chump to you too because he played in the most sorry Lion teams. Sure didn't carry that team anywhere but the morgue. Same goes for Gale Sayers, Earl Campbell, Adrian Peterson. The list goes on... so what you're saying is a false premise. Trust me, you don't want to see THEIR won-loss records for their entire career.

Where did I say he wasn't great, wasn't HOF?

That was exactly my point. Go back and read.

The team stunk so it didn't really matter if they kept a RB long past his prime years. Management was laughable, coaching was a joke and in turn those last 5 years meant very little in the grand scheme. Maybe with a competent front office and coaching staff, either he would've been gone past year 10 or the usage would've at least changed. Unfortunately competence wasn't at the top of this teams priority list.

Nobody forgets any such thing. However of that list of "great" linemen.. two of them were drafted AFTER Emmitt. The rest were on the roster when Paul Palmer was leading the Cowboys in rushing with 500 yards. Yes I believe having a good line helped Emmitt.. however it could certainly be argued that without Emmitt, all those linemen have pretty undistinguished careers as well. If you cannot accept that Emmitt was the engine that powered that team then I don't know what to tell you. Emmitt was still churning out 1400 yard seasons when Tuinei, Newton, Gogan, Stepnoski and Williams were all either washed up, on other teams or out of the league. Go pull up the starting lines for the '98 and '99 squads. Let me hear your Hall of Fame pitch for Clay Shiver and Everett McIver. Or how about post-car accident Erik Williams? Or rookie Flozell? At guard no less? The fact of the matter is no matter who lined up in front of him Emmitt was always able to produce .. Father Time did eventually get him.... but it took longer than pretty much any other back in history. Dude just knew how to tote the rock. We will probably never see another one like him.
Excellent points. At a position where career longevity is very short, he was effective longer than anyone I ever watched. Only his hero, Walter Payton was effective as long - and I was too young to see most of his career. We all know what a great line he had in front of him for the first part of his career, but that line was not the same dominant one the last half of his career - thanks for pointing that out. Its easy to forget about that. Ive read many times on this forum how that line made Emmitt, which is ridiculous. They act like anybody could come out of the stands and run for 100 behind that line, lol.
Unlike many of his RB peers, he was also an outstanding blocker too. A complete team guy.

You have proven that your a poor judge of running backs. And your unending homersim to fading cowboy backs late in their careers is your calling card.
Its called being human and being a loyal fan, lol. Being a fan goes deeper than just stats for most, you should try it some time. I forgot - your the guy who thinks Parcells, a Hall of Fame coach, is stupid, lol. The stupid person is the guy looking back at you when you look in the mirror.

It's not possible to have any meaningful football discussion with a person who cannot appreciate Emmitt's greatness.. So I shall endeavor not to even try.

Consider the source, hound dog. Keep talking to him and he will teach you the game of football.
He is the guru, or so he thinks.

Every time I hear talking heads deny Emmitt the respect as the #1 RB ever because he had a great OL I want to scream. Emmitt got a lot of yards just on his own skills alone. He was a great RB, arguably the greatest ever.
I actually do scream....any RB whos had any amount of success has a oline thats worth a crap and that includes Barry because people love to say he had a crap Oline when he actually had a good line with studs like Lomas brown who made an All pro team and as a 4x 2nd team all pro and kevin glover who was a 3 time pro bowler and a second team all pro himself

once you get to the second and third level youre on your own (especially 3rd level)

you dont lead EVERY back thats ever played the game in rushing yards by "It was just the Oline only" Emmitt was special

Very unlikely that even the most dedicated Dallas fan remembers when QB Anthony Wright burned Washington Skin s corner Deion Sanders for 44 yards in a pass to Chris Brazell.

I sure forgot about that play!
Who else forgot that one??

Why is Lukemartin79 allowed to blatantly call me stupid in this thread? Is that now allowed?

Whats really cool about watching these games, besides Emmitts stellar running is trying to remember some the players. Kinda neat to reminisce about DL Underwood and WR Tucker, 2 players i had high hopes for back then. Great vid and thanks for posting!

If only Zeke had THAT o line.
Emmitt had a great online and took advantage. Its not like just ANY RB could step in and do exactly what Emmit did with said line. Thats a foolish assumption.

Altho... Zeke would do pretty well as he did have a decent line. Dallas just over used him. Not everybody is as durable as Emmitt was.

It scares you to talk deeply about football. So go ahead, run away.

Take a breath, bro.

Please just tell me in a sentence or two what you think my message about Emmitt is. Maybe guess where I'd rank him?

I'm trying to understand your point. Forgive me if I'm slow.

It sounds like you are saying:
Throwing away five seasons of Cowboys relevancy was inevitable... and if it helped get Emmitt the record...it's kinda forgivable?

Zeke had a good o line for a 2-3 years (Fredbeard). The last 3 were NOT "good". That's why they asked him to block so much. That is why Tony had to showcase his speed to the edge instead of chewing real yards UP the field.

Relevancy? the team sucked and the issues ran much deeper than what was happening at RB. The garbage years weren’t just inevitable, they were in the works long before that 2000 season. Jerry threw away a lot more than 5 years as he mishandled everything while you sit here and blame Emmitt Smith. Your take is ridiculous. Now post how many carries each RB got next to those YPC stats. LOL it’s like comparing batting averages to a guy with one at bat. No wonder you don’t understand!
