This is the same negativity fans always spew about UDFAs.
Very good players who fill roles go undrafted and make teams all the time.

This TE will be part of every 2 TE set, at TE is short yardage, and certainly the body type that will be on the kick return team. Time will tell. The man got paid because several teams targeted him in free agency.
Our two-TE sets will be Ferguson and Schoonmaker. This TE may make the team, but he's competing with Hendershot for a role/playing time, not our top two.

They didn't take a flier on him. They had to outbid several teams to win him over.

He will kick Hendershot off the 53.
I don't think he's necessarily competing with Hendershot for a roster spot. I think he's competing with John Stephens Jr. for the spot that McKeon had. Really liked what Stephens Jr. showed as a receiving tight end last preseason, but he's coming off a major position and already was trying to make the transition from WR to TE. It's possible that we don't carry four TEs, but I'll be surprised if we don't.

This appears to be news...

1. McC routinely keeps 4 TEs.

2. Hendershot began to fall out of favor last season.

3. So, no. Not a long shot. That 4th slot is Spann-Ford's to lose, and Hendershot's to try to reclaim.
In 2011 Packers kept 5 TE. Not unprecedented.

We have Stephens coming back and Schoonmaker who was a 2nd round pick. This dude is a long shot at best. Good luck to him though.
Stephens is much closer to being a big WR than a TE, I think. Probably every TE on our roster is a superior receiver to the new kid, but I think he is already the best blocker in the room. If he makes the team, it will be solely because of his blocking and special teams. That’s why I think he has a great chance. Your third best receiving TE is not going to be used much.

Since when do TE who run 4.7 seldom get drafted? It’s the average speed for the position. Half the TEs in the league run 4.7s. And if you’re talking about the 6’7” guy… he should have been drafted… we gave him a 250k signing bonus to sign here. McCarthy has been wanting to go to 12 personnel for two seasons now and like to run multiple 3 TE sets. They signed multiple FA TE as UDFA… only to on roster who could block were Ferguson and Schoonmaker!
You beat me to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's only a handful of TE's in the NFL who run sub 4.6. Normal 40 for a TE is 4.65-4.8.

You're right. he didn't even block last year. Hardly saw the field.
Huh??? Better go recheck the stats. Between the offense and special teams he got a lot of snaps.

Considering most thought he wouldn't even make it on the field after his injury, he really showed some big time determination.

Right, always looked to see if they could run 4.7s. Under was gravy and under 4.65 and block functionality was phenomenal.
Honestly not exactly sure why this kid wasn’t picked. Ratings range from 4th to UDFA. Has an issue with short area quickness and drops. Had 95 rec with an 11.2 ypc average at 6’7 270ish.

Fergy ran 4.81
BS-F ran a 4.77
This guy stood out on tape while watching Minnesota RB, dude can block. Glad he's on the team and is officially a pet cat.
Not sure why people are so quick with their negativity on UDFA....just look on the Cowboys roster this year and in their history... less than 300 players get drafted every year...you think that's all the football talent in the country and every one else is a jag. yeah some may be, but there are some diamonds in the rough out there and you never know. They will also have to prove themselves just like any draft pick.

After watching this, I see why they took a flier on him. Watch his play vs Ohio State and Illinois. TEs who run 4.7 forties seldom get drafted, but this guy can block……and truck some DBs.

Sad that we are not excited about Schoonmaker.

We may now have the best TE group in the NFL. Too bad we can't figure out how to use them.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall the Cowboys ever giving a UDFA a guaranteed contract. Most I remember is something like $150,000 signing bonus, but no guaranteed contract.
Luepke has 200k guaranteed and a 20k signing bonus

It matters little, but just re-read the Star-Telegram story on Luepke's signing... actually $180,000 of base salary was reported as guaranteed... and then you add the $20,000 bonus on top of that, and yes... he got $200,000 guaranteed last May.

(I must have confused his numbers with someone else.)

I had a draftable grade on him....late 5....6th rounder. Guys that can block....and are willing to do the dirty work are getting harder to find. I will take him.

There are two reasons we couldn’t run the ball last season, and neither problem was the RB.
  1. The center couldn’t push anyone off the line, nor could he get to the second level or down block well enough for others to get to the second level.
  2. Our TEs were terrible run blockers. Too many TE holding penalties due to poor position and technique.
Ferguson was quoted at the HR derby function, saying his primary goal for 2024 is to become a better blocker. We needed a stronger center and better TE blocking. We‘d still like a stud at RB, but that’s not nearly as important as fixing the blocking first.
