gotcha. I thought they took the total cap cut and just 50% this year and 50 next.

So the real number is 17.75 million which wil almost put us at the cap limit with out any restructuring. makes me want to do it even more.

I'm not sure what you're referencing with the 17.75M.

Ware's cap his options:

Now: 16M cap hit
Restructure: Save about 8.5M in 2014, push 11M into the future
Pay cut to 6M and restructure: Save a little more than 8.5M in 2014, but only push about 5M into the future
Cut: Save about 7.5M in 2014, zero dead-money in 2015
June 1st cut: Save 12.25M in 2014, about 4.75M dead-money in 2015

Ware 12.25 plus Miles 5.5= 17.75

This is not "News:".

They don't need to wait until June 1st on Ware. It will free up 7.5M if he is cut before June 1st. It's 12.25M after June 1st.

Austin saves 5.5M as a June 1st cut.

They can make as many June 1st cuts as they want. The limit of 2 is for "designated" June 1st cuts. That is were they cut the player before June 1st but once June 1st rolls around, they count the same as an actual June 1st cut. There is no significant advantage to the team to designate a player as a June 1st cut, but it allows the player to move on to another team. It's possible that the team can save paying out workout bonuses that are in some players contracts.

if this is beneficial to the player, why would the league limit each team to only two?

Miles is gone June 1st. Ware too if he doesn't take a paycut. It's a no brainer if you take the sentimental side out of the equation.

I know and understand. Dallas can get under the cap before free agency by a few restructures and cuts then after that deadline we can designate the june 1st cap cuts and start signing free agents. We don't have to be back under the cap until training camp after that. So we can sign the free agents knowing June 2nd we will be back under the cap.

17.75 million could really help out in free agents.

That's not how it works. They have to under the cap the entire time. From the start of the league year, thru FA, thru the Draft, thru training camp, the whole time.

understand, but if they designate the players a june 1st cap cut the league allows to that team to go over knowing the team will be under in the near future. Dallas did it just a couple years ago when we cut Spears.

How could anyone watch Ware this season (when healthy) and want to keep him on the roster (even @ the reduced salary). He is a detriment to any young players @ this point. This team should rid the majority of veteran contracts outside of Romo if possible.

Anyone really think Jerry has the cojones to cut Ware?

I think he'll have no problem cutting Austin, but Ware?

A potential Ring of Honor player picked by "him himself"?

I have serious doubts.

Hope so, but see your realistic perspective...

I could be wrong, but I have never heard of anything like that. The only way around it would be to reach a tentative agreement with a player and put off filing it with the league until June 1st, but I don't think the league allows that.

Financially- I hope he does.

But I truly can understand LOYALTY to your own and Ware is Jerry's own in every sense of the word.

I think this has been haunting Jerry for the past three months or so...

If he has the Big Balls to make the HARD decision- he will have gained my respect as a GM like he never has before.
Because I know it will be the hardest decision of his GM career before he has to do something with Romo.

If he doesn't... on one hand- I get it. One the other hand- I don't get it.

I hear ya, it would actually show astonishing development on JJ's part if he could cut that tie (specifically more so because of his overruling of Parcells, etc.)

they don't allow that. If you designate a player as june 1t cap cut you can then go over the cap a certain amount after you designate. The NFL has to approve the june 1st cap cut designation before you can go sign players and go over the cap. Thats what we did with Spears. Might have changed since then but I know we cut Spears as a june 1st cap cut in march and then went over the cap.

It's been done to death, but he didn't take a pay cut. It is however, very team friendly.

Having said that, and I should have been clearer, it's a totally different situation... Brady was at his peak and could have named his number. He had all the leverage in that situation, and he was negotiating a contract. Ware already has a deal, and is basically under public assault to take a pay cut. For him to say, one hour after the end of the season, that he would take a pay cut was mind boggling. I even stated last night in the twitter thread that he surely had to have been talking about restructuring, not a pay cut. No player with any pride, much less someone like Ware, would come out and say that.

Players aren't stupid. Ware knows that his contract makes him a huge target for release. The team saves 7.5 against the cap and he is guaranteed nothing. He could then sign a new deal as FA but it wouldn't be for 4 years and 52m like Dallas owes him. He probably was going through a lot of emotions after the game and he blurted out that he would take a pay cut to stay. Maybe not the most prudent thing to do according to his agent, but it was probably smart to let your team know that their are other options besides an outright release.

You don't get any benefits prior to June 2nd when you use the designation what you are suggesting by signing players in advance to go over the cap is not possible. You have to comply with the salary cap once the new league start and stay under, it is computed differently using the Rule of 51 because of large off-season rosters

Well, not to put these two in the same conversation necessarily, but Santonio Holmes flat out said he'd take a pay cut to stay in NY...
