Landry had to build the Cowboys from less than nothing. No draft pick his first year. Scrubs and cast offs from other teams. Then he had to rebuild the team while remaining on top. That is the most impressive thing. The roster from the team that one the SB in VI is much different from the one that one in SB XXII. Those teams had good long runs. The 90s Cowboys were great and I loved watching them play, but they did not sustain that long term success and Jimmy did not replicate it again in Miami.

There are many different ways to build a team and a winner. Jimmy can do it, but he doesn't have the blueprint to the only way.

You’re not kidding. The rules regarding expansion teams are a lot different today than when Cowboys came into being. We had no draft pick in our 1st season and the only player we got were reject players on other teams.

That is a weak argument.

Just because it is a recent trend, that doesn't make it the rule.

Dallas used #1s on Aikman, Smith and Irvin. Turned out OK.

NE used a #1 on a RB this year. Pittsburgh a #1 on a WR.

Losers last year used a #1 on a RB and swapped one for a QB. Tried to use one on a WR.

Plenty of ways to build a team. That has been the basic point of the discussion on my part.

Yes, it's such a weak argument it hasn't worked since we did it over 10 years ago.

There's this little thing called a salary cap now.

Note: Our team was dismantled trying to keep the triplets together.

I'm not interested in what positions they drafted in first round after they've won (NE/Pitt).

I wanna see the team that drafted QB, WR and RB in first round in recent history and won the Super Bowl.

When you strike out on that find a team that won a SB while drafting ONE of those positions in the first round (I'll spot you STL).

While their is more than one way to build a team (AZ, Indy, Clev, Pitt, SEA, SF, Oak, NE, TEN).........

How many of those are really worth emulating?

I look back now and I'm thinking the Cowboys should have gone another route that year. Of course I would have preferred Merriman at #11 and Ware at #20 but that didn't happen. But what the Cowboys needed more was offense. So many years have passed by with the Cowboys failing to take a offensive player in the first round.

With players such as Matt Jones, Mark Clayton, Aaron Rodgers, Roddy White and Heath Miller still on board one can only imagine how the team would differ. Let's consider Spears, we were able to land a starter in Canty who came at the bottom of the 4th round. We still had Greg Ellis... We knew going into the draft that Keyshawn was going into his last year. Funny how BP drafted Fassano when a Heath Miller could have started the 2 TE system a year earlier... Even more a QB in grooming such as Aaron Rodgers or Jason Campbell could have been learning behind Bledsoe... Matt Jones; QB or WR... The best of both worlds... Hopefully Spears will work out, but I have the feeling that when we took Greg Ellis and passed a Randy Moss that we may have missed out on someone special...

I wanted Merriman and Luis Castillo, because both are pass rushers, but now the Chargers have them and their secondary is third rate compared to ours, yet they have an elite defense. Ware is good player, but Merriman is better, while Spears is only a run stuffer and you can get solid run-stoppers in almost every round. Merriman and Castillo combined with our secondary would have won the Jacksonville game for us because Leftwich wouldn't have had time to throw and our secondary would have been served some early Christmas gifts.

No. Spears is very solid and you have to remember that a DE playing in the 3-4 isnt meant to really be a big sack guy because they are often double teamed and really set it up so the LB's can get the sack or the big pressure. He seems to be a guy with very good work ethic and a big heart so i expect him to continue to improve

First, Ware would not have been available had we tried to push him to the 20th pick. Ware was our top priority and we had to take him at 11.

Second, right or wrong, Parcells priority was to build a 3-4 defense and Spears was necessary. We couldn't build a strong 3-4 defense with 270 poind DE's like Ellis. Ware AND Spears were necessary - drafting offense would have left the job only partially done.

Third, yes we could have drafted Miller and had a better start to the 2 TE formation (we actually did start it that year with Campbell), but we wouldn't have even been able to start with the 3-4 defense at all.

Fourth, Parcells obviously believes in Romo, so Rogers or Campbell were unnecessaary picks in his eyes.

I personally thought that WR needed to be an issue in that draft, but in hindsight I like what we did.

There was no need to convert to the 3-4 when we already some pieces in place for the 4-3. It doesn't make sense to reinvent the wheel if you already have one or change horses in the middle of the stream. That only sets you back. None of the coaches knew the 3-4 but Parcells, so he had to teach it to them and they couldn't teach it to the players until they learned it. That whole process was unnecessary and inefficient. The Chargers, 'Hawks and other teams have good pass rushes without changing to the 3-4. It is a sign of inflexibility to only be able to do things one way. Adjusting your system to the available personnel is the efficient way to do things, no matter what your field is.

I tell you what is going to help... Every post in this thread that did throw it off immediately. If stupid threads like this routinely get shot down by the majority of the posters here, the frequency of such threads will wane. You go on ahead and keep feeding the trolls. You can't argue that we shouldn't have drafted certain people because we shouldn't have shifted to the 3-4 ........ like it or not we were shifting and had to draft accordingly.

Arguing the merits of the 4-3 vs. the 3-4 is a different topic.

My point is that the majority of weapons are up in age (Bledsoe, Glenn, TO, Flo, Rivera, )... How many more years can we get from Bledsoe? I've heard on every Cowboy forum that Henson was that guy and I was always rediculed when I said Henson was a bust... We don't know what we have in Romo.... He too could be a bust... With that being said it would be nice to have a 1st rounder grooming... It would be nice to have a 1st rounder ready to step in when Glenn and TO leave which will probably be in a couple of years...

Why shouldn't we be concerned? Do we really want to make progress only to take a step backwards for a year or two... The goal is to continue going in the right direction... We have so many older guys on offense that at anytime it could be over... Who is to say next year we address our needs? Knowing BP he brings in more LB's, DT, CB, and a FS...

Negative things? I am telling you to GET A GRIP when you question the players on this team. I dont feel the need to make rediculously stupid posts questioning the draft picks this team makes before they have a chance to prove themselves.

All you seem to be concerned about is the 'future of the offense' when this is the best offense we have in years and the season isnt even a 1/4 over.

All you seem to do is rip players on this team and lust after pieces of crap like Kyle Orton.

I feel the need to combat the ignorant opinions of people that portray themselves as Cowboy fans. We all have opinions, yours is just wrong.
