Was Romo's Career "Wasted"?

Eli is 21st in interceptions thrown and likely makes it to 15 this year.

This is a pretty interesting list. I figured Farve would be high but Tarkenton, Marino, Elway, Fouts, Peyton Manning, Moon, Bress, Namath were a bit of a surprise. It probably correlates with length of careerto an extent.

Before 1978 passing was tough because DBs did whatever they want. So that's why Unitas, Hadl, Y.A. Tittle, Snead, Tarkenton etc are fairly high. Namath was just overrated IMO. Great Super Bowl win in 60s and did have a great connection with Don Maynard. But just wasn't that great.

Agreed. I wasn't old enough to watch those guys...born in 1972. My brother who was 14 years older than I was a Tarkenton fan. Broadway Joe was probably more famous for being "Broadway" and his guarantee than his career play. I have his rookie card, arguably most famous football card ever, so I am a bit of a Namath fan.

Like I said...I think Eli will have an easier time getting in to the hall of fame than Romo.
Eli is basically Jim Plunkett. Maybe slightly better but still basically the same type of career. Very average but 2 SB wins makes him look a lot better.

  • 4 X probowl
  • 2 X Super Bowl MVP
  • 9th in all time wins by qb
  • 8th in total yards behind John Elway (6th) and warren moon (7th), and he'll pass them both this season and be right behind Dan Marino (5th)
  • 3rd in NFL history for consecutive starts 211
That's a pretty strong case, and he's still playing
@NickZepp
I think his 4x probowl selections, all time wins, total passing yds push him above plunkett. But I get your point. Plunkett is very low in all time wins, passing yds, and has 0 probowl selections.

I said a little better version of Plunkett. Plunkett's biggest stigma was starting at New England and tanking early on but actually once he got to Oakland he wasn't bad. Won 2 SBs obviously. But Manning is in a better era for passing. I will not say Eli isn't a HOFer like Plunkett. But Manning just average or around there in an era of great QBs.

This is passer rating not QBR. Romo is 4th and Eli is 40th.

Pretty giant gap there.

Eli's advantage is that he really has stayed healthy for a long time.

Zero doubt in my mind that Romo was the better player.
If he had as many starts as Eli, then obviously, he would be as high or higher in almost all stats...and not just light years better in overall passer rating.

But health IS a big deal.
Maybe without Dak, Romo ends up playing 2-3 more years. Then again, maybe he gets hurt again and just hangs it up. We'll never know.

Eli was a lot more stable. Jim was completely unpredictable. He might go out in any game and throw 6 interceptions!! The next game he would look good. Eli is a better QB than Jim...but Jim certainly was more entertaining!! You could just see him getting physically depressed during games where he was playing poorly!! I can remember the coaches trying to cheer him up during games.lol.

yeah those stats are meaningless, it depends on how long a player played, and how many games he played, divided by # of int's.
plus the more a qb throws per game means more int's, so the total # of passes thrown per year or game would be a factor also.

People that think his career was wasted just don't remember most of 1999-2005. Just terrible years for the Cowboys outside of a few bright moments. Possibly the worst era in Cowboys history outside of expansion. Only other years that come close were late 80s early 90s. And it led us to being really talented now and probably to a point where we should compete for a while barring key injuries.
that isnt the issue, Romo uplifted the cowboys from a mess and losing team to a competitive fun team to watch.
The point is with Romo dallas couldnt win in playoffs, much less get to the SB.
That reflects badly on jones, and JG IMO.

Cowboys fans will always hate Romo for not being the second coming of Aikman or Staubach, because to them anybody who isn't a Hall of Famer is a trash. It's an infantile way to view the world, but whatever, there's no changing it.

In the NFL it almost always takes a strong organization years of fielding strong teams to break through and win a Super Bowl. But the Cowboys could never put a good team on the field in back-to-back seasons.

The Patriots have Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and are the best in the league at gaming the draft, salary cap, free agency and comp pick systems in the modern era. They fail most seasons anyway. The Cowboys had Wade, training wheels Garrett, and Jerry's drunk wheeling-dealing. Why do people think that should have won the Cowboys a darn thing?

Good post lol.
you could say the same thing about witten as romo, he hasnt won a SB either, same as romo, so is he not hof worthy either?
people dont blame TE's for not winning, just the qb's lol
It takes a team and FO to win SB's, a qb is just one key part of it.

Witten is still playing, after 14 years lol, so maybe he gets lucky in next few years, but
if not he is same as romo.

Wow
Im watching the NFL Rewind of that 2006 Cowboys at Seattle playoff loss.
I forgot that they originally gave Witten the 1st down inside the one with 1:20 left.
They ruled it a 1st down!
Then overturned it

Incredibly brutal ending in so many way.
Gorgeous game-winning drive...all for nothing with the overturned 1st own (and probable TD) followed by the muffed FG hold
Good lordy

No, not the same as Romo... The longevity factor will kick in for Witten. Witten has started in 213 games... Romo 127.

Big, big difference. Witten will be right up there amongst the all-time great TE's when it comes to longevity type numbers... Receptions, yards, TD's.

Romo will be high in numbers that aren't longevity based, but his longevity numbers will be much less impressive.
