Was the hold that stopped the clock on Tyron Smith legit?

I say it's a hold

Might as well be a picture of bigfoot.

It's too blurry to make out anything and you could make the case that the entire team is holding with this pic.

I rarely have seen teams take a knee when they know they won't be able to run the clock down to zero or near zero. You run the ball to take as much time off the clock as you can.

Technically, you run the ball because if you get a first down, you win.

no team is taking a knee there. if you get the first down the game is over but even if you don't thats more valuable seconds taken off the clock

The hold on Tyron Smith as well as the hold in the Detroit game last year, are equal to a foul in basketball where someone throws up a half court shot with no time on the clock. Unless Tyron Smith tackled his guy to the ground, they shouldn't flag a play, where the foul has literally no impact, if the game is otherwise over. Either that, or restart the clock once the ball is set for declined calls.

Let help those poor eyes of yours

Frames on the left show Tyron hooking the defender under the armpit. The frames on the right show him holding not letting the defender disengage. Look at the gif below and you should be able to tell. If not get those eyes checked!

I sort of agree. If Dallas doesn't make the first down there, I don't think it should be called. If they made the first down because Murray made significant yardage there, then I would understand the call more. However, he was tackled about where he would have been if there was no holding, so why call it? Almost like a pass that isn't catchable so they don't call pass interference.

However, the refs are told to call what they see, and I can understand why the refs did call it there, so I sort of see both sides.

Oh tackled? Please try to contain you're over the top the world is out to get us spiel. I'm sure he was not the only defender who was upset that a hold was not called. Should I put it in CAPS?

I have learned to never take you seriously on anything

Looks like Leary should have fired into the LB a bit more instead of just letting him come in. He could have created an inside lane for Murray.

It looks like the play was intended to be run inside of Smith with Murray following the full back. If Murray does run inside, then it is possible holding wouldn't have been a hold called as it would have changed what the defender was trying to do. Dallas also would not have gained any yards, either.

I don't understand how they can decline the penalty and still get the benefit of the stopped clock. If they decline the penalty they should at least run the 25 second play clock. If they accept the penalty, then Dallas gets 3rd down over.

You aren't really thinking this through. Even if you make it a 25 second clock, you pretty much destroy all but about 15 seconds of the benefit of the call. Gee, decline and lose 25 seconds or accept and have to go another down that eats up 40.

Since both of those options basically kill the team that needs the ball back, you are inviting offenses to commit penalties at will to run out the clock.

One of those calls that could go either way.

Considering the time of game, there's no way you throw a flag on that.

He did the same at Detroit last season and pretty much cost them the game that they had no business losing.
