Watching Barber (My thoughts)

Barber looks even stronger this year. He has better vision and far more versatile.

He's a 1500 yard 15-20 TD Running back. Phillips needs to make him the #1 for good of team

They say he put on 10 lbs & it shows.

What i hope really what is going on here is that the coaches realize that Jones is most effective if you limit his carries. He comes out the gate strong lets hope we can ride it better this time.
Bingo.

Seriously -- what does that have to do with anything?
We don't know yet, which is why I said to watch Saturday night's "dress rehersal" very closely. If the trend continues, it means Barber's getting more carries than Julius. Which in turn probably means that, in the regular season, Julius won't be getting the 71/29 split over Barber that he got over the first half of last season.

This would be a good thing for both of them, and I don't need to tell you why.

I think he's asking how you get to this point in your analysis.

Last year in the thrid preseason game (the first half of which should be the tune-up for the regular season) Julius got 15 of the first 18 carries. I think it's safe to say that you play that half the way you're going to start the regular season.

If we decided to do that again, I'd be very surprised, and also disappointed. I want Julius to be fresh late in the season. Giving him 71% of the carries that go to him and Barber again would be, in my meaningless opinion, one of the worst mistakes Phillips\Garrett could make. I think they're smarter than that, but again what do I know?

Ok, so your point is that the 3rd preseason game typically mirrors the regular season plan. I can see that, but what does that have to do with the stats your were giving in regards to the first two preseason games?

I wasn't trying to say that I thought I'd uncovered any secrets, just pointing out a minor difference through two games, and saying it's a situation worth keeping an eye on. For all I know, the reasons you gave earlier explain it away easily, and we won't see much of Barber with the first team, except for his 3rd-down duties.

But I don't think even the staunchest JJ apologist would expect him to get 15 of the first 18 carries this time.

I don't know what he'll get. And I don't think what he gets really has any bearing on what he'll get during the season. I just don't see the connection. If you really want to look into correlation, most #1 RBs get very few touches in preseason. Some don't even dress.

So why has Julius played?

Most #1 RB's get a lot more than a 57 carries/43 carries split over the backup for the last 8 games of the season, too. That stat, and the reason for it (either JJ wearing down, or Barber coming into his own, or both) are more than enough to get me interested in how they're going to be used in this upcoming game.

If LaDanian Tomlinson doesn't play the first half this weekend, it's not a story.

You haven't established any sort of correlation. My counter was that the best #1 RBs play the least in preseason. Thus, establishing at least some sort of correlation. I just don't understand your point of throwing out stats when they're not telling us anything.

So the less you play in the preseason, the better you are. I got that. Maybe that's the only thing that needs to be considered, but I'd leave room for other possibilities.

We'll know Saturday night. Or as you seem to say, we'll know game 1 of the regular season.

If you're a #1 RB, it does seem that the less you play in preseason the better you are. That's exactly what I said.

JJ got more carries than Barber last preseason though.

So which seems more relevant, what normally happens with other #1 RB's, or what normally happens with ours?
Define "ours," because it seems to me that we've never seen what this coaching staff does.
