Watkins: Cowboys are in rebuilding mode

No need. They're people in more need of a blessing than me. I'm just not going to get all down about a few moves that have been recently made and act like everything is falling from the sky.

good for you

And let me get something straight - in today's NFL you don't have to 'rebuild'. It's a league of parity, just look at the Chiefs and Panthers. As long as you have a quality quarterback and a decent coach - you have a shot any year.

It's not like what Parcells had to do following Campo - where it takes 2-3 years of quality drafts and sound free agent moves to be in contention again.

There is not a less-talented, less-connected, more poorly qualified sportswriter in America than Calvin Watkins.

Start there.

Maybe they don't consider Garrett a lame duck coach?

Then why no extension?

If Jerry thinks his trainee will lead him to the promise land, why has he not stepped up with a long term extension?

Maybe Jerry knows 95% of the fanbase thinks Garrett is a complete idiot and would celebrate like its 1999 if he was fired tomorrow. Maybe that is why Jerry doesn't give him an extension.

im a little irked we can fling the word "rebuild " around, yet we let Alex Tanney walk and kept Orton. While i didnt mind Orton , if you are planning rebuild, why get rid of a possible project?

Because they weren't rebuilding then, silly.

This team and it's direction are a before and after lunch decision process.

If the picture in you avatar is you, I have posted a link to buy videos that show what a real football team is about. Not the fantasy football team of an egotistical owner who is looking for anyone to say he's a "football guy."

You may be too young to remember.

No need for the link. I was watching this team hard core next to my dad and uncles on game day since 88.

I don't agree with a lot that has happened over the years, but I learned a LONG time ago that I have no control over what this franchise does, so theres no need for me to get worked up about it. I chose to be a fan long ago and my loyalty will always remain; good or bad. The same loyalty that would keep me up at night while I was deployed in '04 to see this team play and go on missions with little to no sleep.

How is it reality if they don't consider him a "lame duck" coach?

How long do you want to keep letting him "learn on the job"? Also what the other poster stated, why no extension, and what will you do after we dont make the playoffs this season? How does Jerry spin that?

Let me ask you this, if Garrett doesnt make the playoffs, what is your expectation for the following season? Just arriving at Valley Ranch? Showing up to games?

Garrett hasn't earned a extension. He's putting out a 8-8 product. The Rangers just gave Ron Washington a 1 year extension despite having 2 world series appearances. You can't give him extension if you don't feel he's earned it. Was Anthony Spencer a "lame duck" player because they franchised him instead of giving him a long term deal?

Here's the end of the article....

Stephen Jones belly laughs at that agent. The man just doesn't understand.

What I don't understand is how $8.5m is not enough to do anything in FA. Nevermind that we have another $6m coming June 1.

So we will rebuild until Romo is basically done? I dont buy it. We are not rebuilding, we are doing whatever we can to manage our awful contracts.

The second part isn't a problem. Plenty of teams have rebuilt their rosters while drafting outside the top ten in the draft. Plenty of teams like Jacksonville, Cleveland, and Oakland consistently pick in the top ten in the draft and remain bad. Besides getting the opportunity on once-in-a-decade prospects in the first three picks or so, it is 95% who is buying the groceries, and 5% what time they get to go into the store to buy them.

Who has rebuilt without top 10 draft picks?

I agree having high picks guarantees jack squat but rebuilds are almost always done with multiple top 10 picks.

When you need 8 starters.
It isn't that we can't sign anyone, it's that we can;t fill out a starting roster right now.
2m of that June money is just rookie.
Another 2m is the league year padding you keep for emergencies.

So we have realistically 10m to build with.
We lost Spencer, Austin, Ware, Hatcher, Waters. That's 5 starters.
We've signed 0 legit starters thus far.

panthers and chiefs did rebuild.
chiefs fired haley in 2012, took a year off and let the interim coach go win 2 games in 2013 before hiring reid and giving him GM say.
they drafted very high and spent a lot on free agency plus traded for a new QB.
that is the very essence of a rebuild.... high draft picks, lots of free agent money and a new QB.

panthers did same in 2010. they won 2 games....
drafted an R1 QB in 2011 and won only 6 games.
they've been slowly building around young, high draft picks.
Cam went 1st and Keuchley(sp?) went 9th overall.

We don't need 8 starters. We need 3. 4 if you don't like Wilcox. We are set of offense and LB and the secondary have bodies.

Bernadeau, Williams, and Leary are all still on the squad.
