Watkins practice notes

Since we've been using a 4-2-5, Winters would probably be considered the SLB with Downs in the nickel being the WLB.

I'm not sure who's out there or how they are aligning when they are in the heavier package, the 3-4 looks. I'm hoping Barham can win some snaps there at MLB, pushing Overshown to the other ILB spot where he can use his speed to run to the ball since that spot is better protected by the DL.
Thanks, was hoping youd answer. This stuff confuses me regardless, and it’s worse since I haven’t even seen the configurations and who is where etc…That comment struck me as odd though.

People around here are clamoring for another LB, meanwhile they aren’t using the one they traded for?

I realize CP wants an extra DB, and the versatility of both Thompson and Downs should help that cause. Normally I’d get bad Quinn flashbacks of not enough size on the second level, but the guys up front are dramatically different so they just might get away with it.

I will say that for some reason I trust this coordinator more than I have any coach here in a very long time. I think he gets it done. Then of course leaves. Please win first lol.

He will forever be known as Phil Madagascar. Mafah for short.

Because we're not really getting information on every look, I'm assuming that Parker is primarily using the 4-2-5 when the offense has three receivers on the field.

I do think some of the stuff that they were doing with Liufau is kind of interesting, starting him out on a play as a linebacker in what would look like a 4-3, then bringing him up on the line for essentially a 5-2 or 3-4 look before the snap. They could do this with Barham as well since he actually does have that experience last year of being an outside pass rusher.

The formation could look like a 4-3 presnap with Eze at RDE, Quinnen at 3-tech, Clark at 1-tech and Gary at LDE, then WLB Winters, MLB Barham and SLB Overshown. Then right before the snap, Barham moves onto the line for OLB Eze, DE Quinnen, NT Clark, DE Gary, OLB Barham and ILB Overshown and ILB Winters. The advantage of that is confusion since the offense wouldn't know who was coming and who was dropping into coverage. Of course, if none of the pass rushers are that good, it won't completely matter, but if you can get a guy unblocked, he doesn't have to be a great pass rusher.

To be fair, the clamoring, for some at least was kicked up a notch when Jerry specifically said looking at trade for either that or pass rush help.

Add to that Stephens comments today about looking adding help with both a trade AND a vet signing.

Its starting give off the vibe that CP not Kerry or Stephen wants to improve there.

JTuck added fuel to fire with a massively too early take on LB play on Williams first long play after Madagascar Mafah fumbled the play before.
