Watkins takes over for Williams... permanently?

Well, it looks like Watkins will be the starting SS for at least the next 4 weeks, while Williams is out with a fractured forearm. This might make a few fans a little nervous, but I think even more Cowboy fans are happy about it and especially on this board. Watkins is a much taller DB at 6-5 and that will certainly help him against other TE's in the league. He's definitely faster than Roy and I don't think anyone will dispute that. If Watkins starts to make plays at the SS position, it's going to be hard for Williams to come back as the starter IMO. I certainly won't shed any tears over it though, because it's all about making plays.

I think Watkins will take advantage of this oppurtunity.

If he plays lights out.

But i don't see it happening

Roy will get his spot back when he gets back.

I think we're fortunate this year that our DB depth is pretty outstanding.

I think Watkins will perform admirably the next month.

Watkins has never been good in coverage when given the chance to play before. I'm not sure why people think that is likely to have changed.

I like Watkins, but Roy will get his job back when he comes back.

However, this could set the stage for Roy being traded or cut in the offseason.

Yeah, Watkins will give the run support that Roy does. Sure he will.

More likely it sets the stage for Watkins not making the team next year.

Then what will Wade do in terms of having a safety being that 8th guy in the box to give run support?

I hope Watkins comes in and does a great job but I'm not happy that Roy is injured.

wade phillips says

"I don't think watkins' natural position is FS, I never said that. I think he has the tools to be a good back up SS in this league"

paraphrased but that's pretty much what he said.

True but lets not root for the guy to fail.

Hopefully he comes in and plays lights out because lord knows nobody else on this team will do it at that position.

Have I been the only one not very impressed with the safeties in pass coverage - and that excludes Roy since he's not out there. I haven't seen Hamlin or Watkins setting the world on fire or anything. I guess expectations are different for those guys.

He's a SS now and they have different coverage responsibilities...maybe that's why.

I expect that he's bringing Hamlin up for run support.

I have more than once looked at the coverages and some of the mistakes made and thought, man I know Roy wouldn't have done that.

I wish him all the best. But for folks to suggest that he's going to supplant Roy, well it is just plain silly. Watkins can't hold Roy's jock. I've been pretty critical of Roy over the years but he's head and shoulders above Watkins who I see as a decent backup and ST guy.

Really-it's only week 2. If anything, I've noticed even the better teams have looked a bit sloppy as well.

We're far from punching our tickets to Tampa, but like I said, we're all just getting our feet wet this early in the season. Everything will be fine when all is said and done.
