Usually fans will have their pet cats at TC approaches and starts. A few places will emerge and shine. But are they really as good as they seem.

So I do not have any specific player at this point. And usually choose a dark horse type being a late round pick, or an UDFA.
I usually do not go with a top 3 or 4 (we did not have one) pick, as they are expected to make the team.

For now, I am going with. Even I said above not usually going with a 4th rounder.
WR, Mingo, as many fans hate him. He can emerge and surprise. Consider him a 4th round pick
WR, Campbell, has not lived up to expectations, maybe a change of venue, as Mingo will help
WR, Holden
RB, Blue and even Mafah
LB James, since fans hated this pick as well
CB, UDFA, Childress

Will possibly narrow this down during TC, or add another player .

Mingo was drafted 2 years ago in the second, and has been absolutely horrible so far.

I DEMAND you remove him from your list

Toia v. Mazi @ DT1, Guyton v. Richards and possibly T. Smith @ LT and Hoffman v. Booker @ RG.

If any of the so called preconceived favorites lose out, will the actual winner be named starter or will there be politics involved?

Stay tuned.

No, will not meet your demands.
Applies to the roster now, not where they were previously at or draft position.

Only possibility I could see there is Guyton losing out. Toia is going to be more in competition just to make the team, unlikely he gets a serious look at a starting position. They also wont take away Bookers starting gig unless he completely falls on his face during the season. If Guyton is bad enough they have the guard depth to bump Smith outside. Hope they don't, but they've set themselves up to make it a realistic scenario.

You're my boy Blue!!

As a big, plodding slow dude. My favorite players are always the lightning quick guys.

Jay Toia

Getting 4th round talent in the 7th round is a steal. Lots of family ties in the NFL he can lean on. Hopefully they can coach him up because he has the size and motor to make a difference in the run game. It might take a year but I'm still going with him as my 2025 pet cat.

So without having ever taken an NFL snap Booker is the new Zack because of his draft position?
Hoffman, Bass or all the rest don't get a shot at an open competition may the best man win merit based camp?
IF Toia is a total fringe guy because of Eberflus scheme use of DTs then why draft him? Mazi is the Guyton of DTs imo.
And Guyton...
Needs to be a borderline miracle turnaround in one year in order to be an even adequate blindside protector of an injury prone QB.

My thoughts going into camp.

I'm done with the real time TC hype. I won't even consider it now. This team is loaded with dudes, instead of "those dudes.". There's less than a handful of superstars on this roster.

For the sake of a good Cowboys season then Blue and Mingo for me. If they can become weapons it makes this off season a lot better. That’s a lot to ask from what we have seen so far. I don’t get why any fan wouldn’t want Mingo to suddenly find the light and become a very good WR.

I agree, it's way too early for pet cats. With that said, go Mafah! ;)

I can appreciate the spirit of what you're saying, lets go into this with a 100% open mind with a new coaching staff and do total competition, but its just not how the league works. 80% of 1st round draft picks are going to be thrown into starting situations whether they are ready or not. The Cowboys are not going to overdraft a guard only to turn around and put him on the bench to start the season. It takes years for the Cowboys to admit they've made mistakes with players as we see by them not getting serious competition for Guyton or Mazi.

Toia is not a fringe guy because of scheme or anything else, its just the nature of 7th round picks. Half of these guys wont see the field, and the ones that do are typically special teams guys. The historic numbers show that you only see 1 or 2 guys on average from an entire 7th round class that get contract extensions with the team that selected them. Its a total lottery ticket round and at some point most of these guys are going to get exposed to waivers, put on the PS, etc. The Cowboys waiting that long to address DT was not a serious attempt for them to bring in competition at the position. I say that as someone who really liked both late DT picks, but the odds are against both of them making the team.

They rather he sucks so they can say they are correct, over being wrong and have him be decent or better.
