Pretty sure the reason we drafted Chauncey about two to three rounds earlier than his talent dictated was his run defense and edge setting….but here we are.

fastest, easiest way to improve the run D is getting Hankins back.

I know he racks up stupid penalties but I want 54 on the field more with obviously 33 and much less 42 .

Don’t need to tell Cowboys fans this - we’ve had trouble stopping the run for multiple years. This year, the Cowboys defense is 8th in total defense, 3rd against the pass, and wait for it… 25th against the run. Until proven otherwise, the game plan to beat the Cowboys will be simple- run the ball- especially outside the tackles.

So we have 3 regular season games left before the playoffs. What can this team do to improve our ability to stop the run and improve our defense going into the playoffs?
  • Faster starts on offense. The last several weeks, the Cowboys offense sputters out of the gate. The Cowboys are 8-2 when scoring first; 2-2 when opponent scores first. Last 5 games, the offense has been too slow to awaken. It’s been too rare to see a game start with a 7-0 Cowboys lead.
  • Getting the lead at Half- Cowboys are 8-1 when leading at half; 2-3 when behind or tied at half. When behind, it often forces opponents to abandon the run game, especially down two scores or more late in games.
  • Take Parsons off the LOS more often- hate to say it but Micah Parsons is beat up. Putting his 240 lb body snap after snap against 320 lb lineman is hard on the body. Let him roam more to make plays in the run game. If the opponent is behind and forced to pass, move Parsons up to rush the passer.
  • Football 101- set the freakin’ EDGE of the field!-We all learned in Pee Wee football- defensive ends and outside LBs must set the edge of the field. Don’t let a runner get outside- use the sideline and force them to cut to the middle! How many times are we going to watch Cowboys edge players let plays get outside of their contain? Quinn needs to be working on this over and over in practice. It’s fundamental football.
  • Tackling must improve- lots of weak arm tackle attempts lately. Another football fundamental- the art of tackling. Use shoulder to hit while simultaneously wrapping up. Football is still a game of fundamentals!
Sadly, there is no hidden talent coming to rescue this run defense. We have to get better with what we have. If this offense can stop the slow starts, the defense set the edge and tackle better, that alone can improve what has become the chief weakness our opponents will continue to exploit unless we improve.
This is all wishful thinking! If Quinn hasn't come up with a way to shutdown the run by now then it ain't going to happen this year. Unfortunately for Cowboy Nation we are witnessing a severely flawed organization that needs to blow this whole thing up and start over again with a real GM AND Sean Payton or a young offensive mined coach who still has plays in his playbook that he devised when he was in grade school! The Boys AREN'T winning another game this year!

This is a big issue. Can they change the front up a little? Have him line up then drop back into coverage more? Or something so he's not completely dead going into a playoff game. In those games i'd understand going all out but maybe just scale back a bit till then.

Stop ignoring the DT position in the draft and in FA.

Then all of these other things lol.

I figure, our Defense is going to need at least 2 turnovers per game for us to contend in the playoffs.

Fans exaggerate the importance of run defense.

The Eagles are 25th in run defense as measured by yards per attempt allowed and 19th in in total rushing yards allowed.

The Eagles are 13-1.

The Cowboys made scheme changes after giving up 240 rushing yards to Chicago and 207 rushing yards to Green Bay. In retrospect that might have been a mistake because the pass rush has stalled. It was big pass plays in the GB game that caused the loss, not the rushing yards. Same in the Jax game.

In the modern NFL against teams without a QB that is a dominant runner, pass defense is by far more important than run defense, especially as measured by rushing yards allowed.

The primary issue with the Cowboys run defense is 3rd and 1, not total rushing yards allowed. Without Hankins they struggle on 3rd and 1 and that was exacerbated when LVE was injured in the Jax game.

With a big question mark at the 3rd CB spot, they need to go back to the all out pass rush approach regardless of the impact on run defense.

Honestly, I don’t think the cowboys cando to fix the run defense this season. Also , I don’t know if any of the dts in this upcoming draft class
That could help improve the cowboys run defense immediately. Maybe the cowboys fo could resign Hankins and another free agent dot like Andrew Billlings to rotate with Hankins

Parcells said wsre was too small at 265 to play DE in the 4-3 how much more for Parsons! He is an average LB but supreme passrsusher why not get him playong the derrick thomas role!!

the last 2 games we stated 7-0 and got up last game what 21-7? we lost. 7-0 tens game and had the punt fubled .. so offense has many times stated at least with a lead. we had big lead in the bears game they ran all game no matter what..got up 14 late against GB but still they ran a lot even when down..

so while ill agree with that typical, teams decided to go outside the norm and run all game no matter the score because we dont stop it consistently. Now we get big leads like in GB not only can they run at will they are now like last game picking on Joseph and bland. so they recorded one sack in 2 games and 700 yards of offense given up and along big pays in the air.. so not sure i can agree against us you are expecting teams to react like they normally would most game..

ridiculous expectations to ask our offense to what? get up 17 every game to give our d a shot. Hey Marinelli and Nolan are you back i mean score 40 or lose??

thats insane. the d fell apart and needs to find itself..
To be fair, in regards to bland he has been beaten for gains and TDs but has gotten his hand on the ball for interceptions so I can’t put him in the same sentence as Kelvin Joseph

Bobbo, this was a good thread a couple weeks ago and it does still ring true but now we have the misfortune of the pass defense getting torched too…albeit to injuries, but it’s now another concern

All good points bullet unfortunately I believe we are a little too banged up.
Our defense was somewhat exposed early on and now that Armstrong is gone and Micah is banged up we aren't getting the pass rush that we were.

So forcing teams to have to pass is not having the effect that it once did.

At this point I'm of the opinion that it's most important to move the chains eat the clock score slowly and keep the defense off the field and fresh.

The Jacksonville game was a prime example our defense although injured and a shadow of its former self came up with a turnover that should have won the game.

Our offense couldn't move the chains They didn't need to score They just needed to move the chains and keep the clock moving and they couldn't do it.

With as beat up as this defense is three and out is unacceptable from the offense.
Our quarterback has to figure out a way to move the chains whether he has to run the ball himself or figure something out it has to happen if we are going to go further.

The defense is to beat up at this point and needs to be protected to some degree.

We can go back to your other thread where the front office had a chance to help this whole problem but sat on their hands while our division rival the Eagles snatched up the best run stopping free agents in Linville Joseph and Suh leaving us with nothing after Hankins got hurt.

Those two guys would cover a multitude of sins right now but the Eagles bolstered a position of strength and kept us from fixing our problem it will end up being our undoing shortly.

Great points, but here is the problem..........if you are still struggling with fundamentals in week 15, odds are it aint getting fixed at this point.

Just saying while Blands has flashed and been better then KJ but hes giving up plays as well.. kind of boom or bust guy.. sure much more upside than KJ for sure..ill trust him, some are talking moving Bland outside and using Alexander inside as hes a better slot guy on the team and if Bland can adjust to the outside, we improved our secondary immediately. it is what you might see Saturday.

we have 3 gams to get that worked out as the playoff game is the only one that will truly count.

Defensively we must tackle better people are running 5 to 10 yards after initial contact on our defense that's not going to cut it against anyone.

Offensively, there's always win the T.O.P. battle. That game should have easily been won and all it took was one or two extra rushes in that game to change our fate.
