I'm not gonna act like the cowboys have a berth right to Super Bowl greatness just because of the stars on the helmets.

You said you've been waiting 20 years on a defense? Cowboys were #2 in 2009 in points allowed.

Woe is us

I do hope you are clowning around.

I'm as optimistic as anyone around here, but I can't sell the past decade as a success by any means.

I like the direction we are going since we settled on a coach, but being statistically #2 in defense over 5 years ago does nothing for me.

Why do you automatically assume I want to spend it unwisely? I have looked at all the scenarios and have come to some differing conclusions, but that doesn't make me wrong.

Dallas fans have become conditioned to fear the salary cap like it is the boogey man, instead of understanding that it's just simple math that can be manipulated as needed.

If you want to have a good roster top to bottom you can't have too many superstars on second contracts. They eat up all you space and you often end up with a roster with major weak spots. You end up with a roster with very little depth. In the recent past we had rosters with too many highly paid vets on 2nd deals and that roster quickly imploded going from 13-3 in 2007 with several young players just approaching their peak but 1-7 to start 2010. Look at all the bad contracts we had on the team in 2010:

Flo
Bigg Davis
TNew
Roy Williams (WR)
Marion Barber
Andre Gurode

Of course, we had these highly paid players who were still playing well but soon would also be overpaid:

Demarcus Ware
Miles Austin
Jay Ratliff
Doug Free

The teams that have a strong record of being successful year in and year out have a pattern of not accumulating too many superstar salaries on their roster at once. They seem to have the ability to let players go before they crump and recognize that it is okay to let some second-tier talent go at hit FA.

Anyhow, this is why some of us are against going after one superstar in FA as opposed to say getting after a guy just a rung below. Most of the time you get the stronger team by spreading those cap bucks around a bit.

I understand all that but the cap is already projected to be 25m more than it was in 2011 when the new CBA kicked in and rising. The rosters haven't expanded and the top positional pay hasn't really increased. So that is almost 2 or 3 major contracts that can be added to any team.

You didn't recall overspending for any high priced OL free agents.

Nate Livings was exactly that.

So I reminded you.

We may have paid him more than he was worth, but I would hardly call that "high priced." Nice try though.
