I don't want to make fun because you never know what's going to happen in a player's career. I'd be surprised if Amendola ever becomes anything special in the NFL, but it could happen.
But I think looking back at what might have been is an exercise in futility. There have been several players we've "given up on" who went on to solid careers elsewhere, and there have been several players other teams have given up on that have done the same.
Jay Novacek comes to mind quickly. The Cardinals allowed him to slip away as a Plan B free agent after five mostly mediocre seasons, and where would we have been without him?
They were at least mediocre....
Amendola didn't do anything here, even when given the chance.
He wouldn't have been in the Rams starting lineup had they kept decent receivers.
People look at Amendola as a Welker clone, but outside of the size comparison, they are not the same player.
Where Welker is a dependable pass catcher (and holds on to the ball for dear life), Amendola is not.
Amendola's career is riding on the fact that Welker made a path for him.
He can be a ST guy with some time at WR, but to honest I never saw him being an integral part of the offense.
He's a decent guy no knock on him there, but I don't understand the love when he didn't accomplish anything.
Ogletree has accomplished more, and he had to fight for that roster spot.
