Whoever wrote this analysis is wrong on several points, especially about Mazi Smith being slow. Mazi Smith, at 325 lbs, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.85 seconds. 4.85 seconds as a true Nose Tackle!

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Mazi-Smith-DL-Michigan

Plus, his tape shows him to actually be very mobile, aggressive, strong, quick and disruptive for a big NT.

Here, Voch makes a very thorough, accurate and lengthy breakdown of Mazi Smith. (Start watching at the 1:30 minute mark)

Mazi Smith most certainly doesn't look slow, immobile or unathletic. Whoever wrote that ridiculous and so inaccurate assessment of Mazi Smith is downright blind and ignorant. Embarrassing to go by someone's terrible analysis without actually watching and studying some tape on Mazi or any player.

Smith didn’t run a 40 at all in the draft process…no idea where that site is getting that # from but I highly doubt it’s even close to accurate

Not that the 40 means anything for a NT…

Hmm, thanks for bringing this up. NFLDraftBuzz is very good about being as accurate and honest as possible. I did find a Buffalo Bills website mention (according to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman) how Mazi Smith ran a 4.85 40 time at his Michigan Pro Day. Whether that is true or not, I don't know. It also says this Bruce Feldman stated, "Smith does 22 reps on the bench press, but that’s with 325 (not 225). He close-grip benched 550 pounds. He vertical-jumps 33 inches. He broad-jumped 9-4 1/2. Smith, who had 37 tackles last season, has clocked a 4.41 shuttle time, which would’ve tied the best by any defensive tackle at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, and it would’ve been better than any defensive tackle weighing 310 pounds or more in the past decade. His 6.95 3-cone time would’ve been by far the fastest among defensive tackles in Indianapolis.”

Apologies if all of these numbers are not true. I'm simply posting what I see online.

Heard KC was wanting to jump to the Cowboys slot and they were going to take Mazi.

The thing is could we have taken Meyer and still had Mazi in 2nd round who in Mocks was sledded as our 2nd round pick.

How did Mazi move up into the 1st round ?
Mazi was not going to be there at 58. And he was a top 20 player on our board. Folks can be upset that they had him ranked that high. But keep in mind that the team drafted Smith last year when most thought he was a 2nd round player. And it turns out they got their LT for the next 10 years.

And if Mazi becomes our DT for next 10 years that’s fine.

Just where would Mazi have been in 2nd round is a fair argument. Maybe we could have move up in 2nd round?

The Chiefs reportedly offered to trade up to our spot, but apparently they were targeting Mazi so we declined.

I am really happy about this pick. Stopping the run is a very big deal for obvious reasons. Control the game and wear down the defense. We have witnessed this thru the years for sure. I will never watch the draft on TV again. Totally soul numbing. Most of the analyst are boring and seem like they don't have a clue. GO BOYS!!!!

Pay no attention to the criticism of value and sacks and all that is coming. The Cowboys finally have added a real powerful bleepkicking DT who will not be bullied. A tone setter that will do all the dirty work to free up his teammates. There's a reason why Micah Parsons was so excited for the pick.

Oh and he's not just a NT. The tools are there to develop as a rusher. He moves better than his size. He's quick. He's got great feet for a big man. Dan Quinn has a lot to work with.

This is a radical shift in philosophy that I think we all should applaud.

The Cowboys will get mediocre grades for this selection and those grades will be wrong. He is exactly what we needed on defense, and as my 25th ranked player on my board I can say without any bias that he's value at the pick.

Well done. Thank you. I don't think I could have gone another season without a real DT. Now, for the love of God, don't crap the bed in round 2.

Yes...this is what I have been harping on since before the draft! Defense, and one in the middle. Sweet!

I absolutely love this pick. I never expected them to finally take a stud DT in the first round and they did it. They actually did it. I am elated.
I'm right there with you. I just hope it's not too late we always seem to have one of the units peaking as the other is declining. we need to get them both on the same trajectory to be effective in the playoffs.

Mazi needs to lose some weight.

330+ is big and slow.
Maazi is built like a bull! His body composition is a lot of muscle. You look at Jalen Carter the Eagles took and he's fat.
You need to go watch some film of him. He is exactly what the Cowboys needed.

Mazi grades out as a run stopper. And a 2nd day pick.

But he isn’t a pass rusher.

and he’s big and slow. 330+ LBs.

He’s gonna be in the DT rotation.

25+ snaps a game.

Strengths
  • Possesses rare combination of size and athleticism.
  • Bendy and stout in his lower half.
  • Power to punch and lift blocker under his pads.
  • Plays with lively feet and short-area quickness.
  • Able to slide, swim and seize the gap.
  • Yanks and pulls guards off-balance from any direction.
  • Foot quickness to be part of a twisting rush unit.
Weaknesses
  • Hasn’t made many plays behind the line of scrimmage.
  • Motor runs out of gas when tempo heats up.
  • Slow reaction to movement gets him sealed.
  • Struggled against Iowa’s zone scheme attack.
  • Surprising lack of anchor consistency against double teams.
  • Unlikely to see many passing downs as a pro.
Slow? He was #1 on the athletics “freaks” list.

clocked a 4.41 shuttle time, which would’ve tied the best by any defensive tackle at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, and it would’ve been better than any defensive tackle weighing 310 pounds or more in the past decade. His 6.95 3-cone time would’ve been by far the fastest among defensive tackles in Indianapolis. The fastest was 7.33. Smith’s 60-yard shuttle time is 11.90.
