I’m pleased with the player’s potential although we can debate his draft spot. We needed to address the DT position and did so.

the opposite of this is the Commanders taking a CB when they clearly needed to address the QB position and passed on Will Levis

When was the last time we took a DT in the first round - was it the Russell Maryland pick?

Fans complain all the time about not addressing the position and then we do it and it's not good enough. I'm happy with the pick.
Who said it's not good enough? This pick seems to be getting high marks.

I don't know what to think. I know nothing about this guy so I can't complain.

But looking at the stats, I would expect more production from a first round dt. I know he's a nose tackle, but just on sheer talent and athleticism alone, I would expect more on the stat sheet for a guy from a powerhouse like Michigan.

Taco didn't have great stats either. He was drafted for his ideal size for the position.

Time will tell.

I’m torn about this pick. Just being honest. All I heard all week was we had the luxury of skipping need and picking BPA no matter position. Then we..looking at the landscape..reach on need. Now this isn’t to say that we didn’t sorely need a DT and that the kid might not be a stud but overall the knocks on him are regarding motor and using his gifts. That scares me. I thought there was other value there.

Before I get ripped I’ve loved a majority of our 1st round picks. The only ones I didn’t were Taco..was right…and Frederick..dead wrong.

This team‘s interior has been a mess. Smith’s best football is ahead of him. Rare combination of power and athleticism. I thought he would go a little later, but I trust the evaluators.

The need pick would have been to take Mayer, who everyone thought would be the target. They took a guys that has the traits to be a terrific player. It’s now up to the team to get it out of him.

Mazi was on Mocks as our 2nd round pick at 58th. How did he move up into first round at 26?

The thing is could we have taken Meyer and still had Mazi in 2nd round who in Mocks was sledded as our 2nd round pick.

How did Mazi move up into the 1st round ?

I think Mayer was more luxury. We have TEs and TE is deep in draft. But as you said it’s up to Quinn to change his motor and get the best out of him. Home run if it works. Im
Just 50/50

I don't know. All our expert Facebook fans aren't liking the pick, saying it's another Taco Charlton, because you know...Michigan.

It’s more than the that. The continuous clean pockets to step up into. Great breakdown by Baldy

He doesn’t pressure the pocket though. I get the concept and pressure is not just about sacks but he doesn’t make many plays behind the LOS at at. Half a sack but only 6 tackles for loss in 39 games. Pushing the pocket in the middle is important and a guy who can do that might not get a lot of sacks but still make an impact on the passing. My worry is in 39 games I didn’t see a guy getting penetration at all

When the Cowboys were on the clock there was a debate going between MM and the others including Will.

Just a guess but I bet MM wanted the TE here and they talked it over and voted for Mazi instead.

IF it is true they like LaPorta, they probably made an argument that he might fall to them at 58 but mazi would not,

Later KC called the cowboys and said that if they had not picked Mazi, they would. That was actually the player they, KC, were trying to trade up to take.
Where did you get the info about KC wanting to select Mazi?

Mazi grades out as a run stopper. And a 2nd day pick.

But he isn’t a pass rusher.

and he’s big and slow. 330+ LBs.

He’s gonna be in the DT rotation.

25+ snaps a game.

Strengths
  • Possesses rare combination of size and athleticism.
  • Bendy and stout in his lower half.
  • Power to punch and lift blocker under his pads.
  • Plays with lively feet and short-area quickness.
  • Able to slide, swim and seize the gap.
  • Yanks and pulls guards off-balance from any direction.
  • Foot quickness to be part of a twisting rush unit.
Weaknesses
  • Hasn’t made many plays behind the line of scrimmage.
  • Motor runs out of gas when tempo heats up.
  • Slow reaction to movement gets him sealed.
  • Struggled against Iowa’s zone scheme attack.
  • Surprising lack of anchor consistency against double teams.
  • Unlikely to see many passing downs as a pro.
Whoever wrote this analysis is wrong on several points, especially about Mazi Smith being slow. Mazi Smith, at 325 lbs, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.85 seconds. 4.85 seconds as a true Nose Tackle!

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Mazi-Smith-DL-Michigan

Plus, his tape shows him to actually be very mobile, aggressive, strong, quick and disruptive for a big NT.

Here, Voch makes a very thorough, accurate and lengthy breakdown of Mazi Smith. (Start watching at the 1:30 minute mark)

Mazi Smith most certainly doesn't look slow, immobile or unathletic. Whoever wrote that ridiculous and so inaccurate assessment of Mazi Smith is downright blind and ignorant. Embarrassing to go by someone's terrible analysis without actually watching and studying some tape on Mazi or any player.

I'm all in. I trust the staff will have him ready to go. Solid pick. Day 2 and 3 is where it gets interesting.
