Win now and build success for the long haul.

We had a plan that we wanted to improve the defense and finish the OL rebuild. Obviously our first choice was grabbing an impact defender first and OL later but after our top 3 were gone we did not reach for a defender or take a bad trade down we adjusted and got possibly the best OL in the draft...certainly the most versatile.

The expensive trade up for Lawrence was a risk but he was the last outside pressure player left and having Selvie or Spencer as your top sack threat sure isn't going to scare DCs. Making that dramatic move up points to winning now while helping long term.

Reports are that we tried to give up a 2015 2nd to get into the end of the 3rd round for Trai Turner to give us an OL of Smith, Leary, Frederick, Turner and Martin for the next 10 years but he got drafted with the deal on the table 2 picks later. Again improve for now and long term success.

Clearly we came into the draft thinking had we stayed healthy last year we'd have gotten in and probably made some noise in the playoffs. One can argue that is a pipe dream but with over two dozen players having to play in your front 7 last year it is a valid thought process.

We lost Hatcher and replaced him with Melton who is younger.

We lost Ware and hope to replace him with Lawrence.

We gave ourselves a viable replacement for Lee, if his injury streak continues, with Hitchens. Obviously there is a dropoff but it is a long way from the cluster frick we saw last year when Lee went down.

The bolstering of the OL improves the offense which helps keep the defense off the field. We took this to the next level by drafting Street who supplies depth outside and UDFA Copeland to basically add another guard as lead blocker in the running game. Longer drives, more TOP and more points all protects the defense.

When Mayock kept saying so and so has a draft plan and you can see it while saying oh, that was a Dallas pick I have to laugh. We had a plan...a very clear one...and when the draft Gods conspired to screw us we adjusted on the fly, and while not having our "dream" outcome, we sure as hell stuck to the spirit of our plan and came close to pulling it off 100%.

Will that be enough to put us over the top? Only time will tell but we are due for a healthy season and with one I can see us winning the East and then it it anyone's to win.

I have been making the argument for some time now that we are still a a round of Free Agency and another draft away from contention. But perhaps your right...with a little Marinelli magic, this defense could blossom and considering the state of the NFCE, it is not out of the realm of possibilities that this team reach the playoffs. From there, it's all about who gets hot at the right time. I'm a long way from being sold on this team, but I'll at least admit your argument has merit; especially if this team could simply stay healthy.

The good news is that we have one more year of Doug Free at RT, so missing out on Turner was not a total loss.

Great post BZ. Simply outstanding.

Apparently part of our plan was for Pittsburgh to take our target at 15 leaving us with the offensive lineman.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I think the plan was fairly simple: Add talent that would make the team competitive while continuing to add youth to compete at positions of weakness.

So it was Plan C or D. Oh well… .

I'm glad that Shazier was snatched so the team was forced to make the smart decision and go with the OL. Giving up next years 2nd to move into the end of the 3rd still shows their incompetence (unfortunately).

Every team has a "plan" for the draft. And each team feels great and publicly says so even after they had to go with Plan B, version 5.0 after things changed on the fly. It is all part of the draft chess game.

All in all, we wanted to address both lines, we did that.

More interested in the results than the warm fuzzies that a "plan came together". If we picked the right players, it will be self evident.

I agree with your statement that we had a plan, but the cards didn't fall like we hoped they would. Lawrence may turn out to be well worth the trade up. That remains to be seen. I hope it works out that way.

The one thing in your post that I disagree with is your suggestion that we drafted to win now, while preparing for the future. Lawrence was a "win now" pick. If we had been preparing for long term team success we would have stayed put and not moved up for Lawrence. The opportunity cost of moving up was a 3rd round pick (and presumably a potential starter) to get Lawrence, thus arguably extending the time it will take to rebuild with one less player/pick. I'm not saying that it was a bad more .... or a good move .....it is too early to know that, but let's be real, that was a "win now" move whether you agree with the decision they made or not.

Wow, some pretty snarky comments, but that's to be expected. Some just need to continue to complain, instead of trying to see the good in things and that they are indeed making progress.

Anyway, great post BZ, awesome as usual.

So what, they didn't get the player they wanted in the 1st round, darn them Steelers for having a plan too.
So when that happened, guess what the Cowboys still stayed with their plan. they just had to make an adjustment and go about it a different way. What happens when you hit traffic. do you stay stuck in it, or do you look for an alternate route. Well the cowboys, took that alternate route, and ended up in the same place.
OL just happened to be the 1st detour, DE the 2nd. wow imagine that. Got to the same place. A plan that came out good. OK, maybe it cost a 3rd, like losing a little time on the detour, but they kept moving.

Using your analogy, someone (not me) could argue that the Cowboys were so fixated on the ONE detour that they failed to recognize the possibility of an even better one being available. :p I think time will determine whether the "detour" was worth it.

wow, an alternate route in the draft, hope no one else thought of that, i just expected all the players we wnated would be there, i never expected the other teams to pick the players we like, there are so many.

When making a plan, it's incumbent that the planner have a plan A, B, C, etc. I think the Cowboys were prepared in that regard.
