We have to assume that Jacksonville offered us 16 and 49 for 9...

Stephen said earlier that they had four guys on their short list of who they wanted. So if you trade down seven spots, too big a risk that those guys are all gone by 16. Then you have people complaining that they got too cute and missed their guy. I'd love to have 49, but I'm fine with them staying put and taking Smith.
Only two of the four (at most)were gone by 16 and that is counting Smith. JJ Watt was probably the other. Castonzo and Solder were still there and so was Cameron Jordan. Amukamara was also still there.

The pick would have been Solder or Castonzo..im glad we didnt move down

I'd rather sign Michael Huff to play FS instead of drafting either Williams or Moore.
Williams can play corner. I would have had Heyward or Wilkerson at 40 but they are gone. Red may want Dalton, I hope not.

You have to look at who the other guy would have been. We'll see tomorrow. Castonzo had to be the trade down target.

Correct? If so, how do you feel about not taking that deal?

If they were presented with that and didn't take it then i'm dissapointed, however let's see what happens tomorrow. I would have traded down unles Peterson was there. We took care of the line so i'm happy, but you pick him at nine then he has to start RT.

yeah, like I said..Sodler or Castonzo..I agree that it was likely Castonzo

Idk, 49 is definitely tempting especially how the first round turned out, lots of talent left. I think we could have traded up a couple spots in the first to get Smith, and only had to give up a third or something but that is getting risky so I'm glad we got a guy that we really needed.

Would have taken it, Castonzo would have been a great RT still and we have options for the next round.

Yeah, but it's not like they knew that's how things were going to shake out. Like dbair said, you get exactly what you want, or you don't make the deal.

The Boys had Solder rated higher than Castonzo

They scout the teams, they definitely had a good idea; that's why they took calls. They just didn't get a great offer to make them let Smith go.

I'd barely have considered that offer. Regardless how it turned out, it's too big a drop to risk losing out on a blue-chip player. We'll get a good player at 40 who can contribute, and a developmental guy in the third. I'd much rather have our pick of every OL in the draft at 9.

Do you guys remember passing on Steven Jackson so we could trade down and get Julius Jones and an extra pick?

How did that trade down work out? You dont always have to trade down, even if the points are in your favor. Sometimes the best thing to do is to just stay put and draft the bpa on your board.

Tyron Smith was ranked #5 on our board supposedly, so to get him at #9 is a freaking great move!!!

I'm sorry. There are way too many assume's and what if's for this to be a concern.

We got a great player. No need to get cute all the time. Sometimes the best trade is the one you DON'T make.

when they were waiting I was thinking Minnesota was the only realistic trade down partner that would have given us a chance to get Smith...they didnt call so they played it safe and took their man.

maybe.

Look, hindsight on this is clear, but if Smith and Castonzo are equal on your board, with a dropoff thereafter, you look at the gap and decide how worried you are that your guys aren't available.

If we'd decided we were going OT, it seems reasonable that our guys would have concluded Smith and Castonzo were BOTH likely to be gone by that point.

As it turned out, that didn't happen but I don't fault them for their educated guess. I would have vastly preferred Castonzo and 49, but what are you going to do?

They likedly offered this trade to Dallas. There was info coming from credible sources that Skins wanted Gabbert.

Suprised myself that the Skins didn't take him - was info coming from credible sources that we were trying to trade up to get him. Now looks like it was a really good smoke screen that even fooled the insiders.

Skins will draft a Qb in second round and/or take a Qb next year (likely going to be really bad this year and get a top 5 pick).

Also heard they really like Vince Young.

Good choice by Dallas. They got their guy. Talent dropped off bigtime at around 13

They were saying in another thread that two of the four guys on our list had already been selected by the 9th pick. It would have been too great a risk that you wouldn't get one of the remaining two if you moved back seven spots. I think the two remaining were Smith and Watt.
