According to sources, the Cowboys are talking details of a 1 year deal with this guy.

No.. seriously. Heath is trash. We desperately need a safety and all of the good possibilities are drying up.

I haven’t followed this draft class (not having a 1st takes a bit of the joy out of it). But I’ve read that it’s deep at safety and DT. Do folks here agree with that?
Yes. Although not just DT but DL in general. Some good OL prospects as well. Receivers seem deep too.

Heath isn't trash but we will upgrade the position to let Heath go back to a jack of all trades backup/ST ace. Earl Thomas would have been great but paying what the Ravens did would have been crazy. Look for a bounceback candidate like George Iloka to be signed, Dallas has had plenty of success getting a stopgap season from guys like Darren McFadden, Jeremy Mincey and Rolondo McClain.

It's deflating for the front 7 to push teams to 3rd & long only to get pinched by a Heath air tackle on a chain moving pass....

Our defense is only as good as that last line and that last line is shakier than a PYT at a Pitlbull concert.

If you look at the guys they're interviewing you'll see a pretty nice group of draft prospects.
They may take one as early as pick 58.

And what happens if the draft comes, there is a run on safeties and the ones you like at 58 go by the wayside? Do you trade up with the limited picks you have? Do you then reach for a safety with a lower grade? Do you wait until the 3rd or 4th round where a lesser prospect likely be? Or do you just say, "Oh well, we have Heath so it's all good!"

This logic that we can't try to improve our starting safeties now because we will just draft one is so preposterous that it makes perfect sense that's probably the thinking of this bizarre franchise.

You’re aware that they’ve been looking into multiple safeties?

We could just as easily straw man your argument: so we have to overpay for a safety, in case we can’t find value in a safety rich class?

I am no Heath fan, but that front 7 is what got destroyed by the Rams and gave up a million yards rushing.

We like our guys (they leave out “cheap” when they say that).

How does looking at multiple safeties change the point? What if there is a run and a number of the ones they like go off the board before they pick 58th? Is that an impossibility? What if that happens and then a few more go off the board by 90 and they are left with picking, say, the 7th best safety on their draft board in the 3rd or 4th round? The whole point of adding a vet is that it's insurance in case that happens. You grab a guy you know is better than Heath, plug him in and if you can draft someone that turns out to be better, great.

And who said overpay for a safety? I have never said overpay for a safety. In fact, after Thomas got what he got, I lobbied for guys like Tre Boston or George Iloka who would likely be cheaper, short term contracts that don't hurt your cap, present a short term upgrade and allow you more flexibility in the draft where you can still take a S there if one falls to your pick that you like and also allows you to not have to force a pick just to make sure you get a S.

We can piece together the SS position and it will be hugely successful like last year's WR by committee.
