We Need Instant Gratification

I think most fans feel we should beat a team like the Cardinals who are not good and have a rookie QB who wasn't that great of a prospect and really did nothing to impress me on Saturday.

For me, I get frustrated when Marion Barber makes a big penalty when he's a veteran who should know better...and apparently nothing is done about it. Roy Williams fumble against the Saints IMO, was a dumb play. But it wasn't careless. Barber was careless and Garrett didn't even say anything to him and it was business as usual.

Generally, I like a lot of things about the Garrett era as interim coach, but stuff like that still un-nerves me. If anything, chewing out Barber would've gotten the point across as veterans don't like being chewed out on National TV, especially when they are in the wrong. Something tells me that Barber wouldn't do that again. But since he didn't get chewed out, I leave that happening again with a player at 50/50.

Yippee.

Or that this team has some issue with getting the wrong cleats quite often. Shows a lack of preperation. That's one thing I liked about Parcells was one time Cundiff brought in two pairs of cleats and still slipped and Parcells chewed him out for not being prepared and Cundiff told him he brought in 2 pairs of cleats and Parcells stated that it didn't matter because he still slipped...so he wasn't prepared and he would find a kicker who was prepared. After that Cundiff brought in 8 pairs of different cleats and tried every one of them out before the game to figure out what was the best for him. Why? Because he knew he was skating on thin ice if he showed up unprepared again.

I don't fully expect Garrett to implement all of his philosophies as a coach just yet, but it's stuff like this that does concern me because it's really the basics of being a coach. A player gets a dumb celebration penalty that everybody knows would be called....you chew him out for it. Playing an away game with a surface that has to be brought into the stadium....make sure every player has the proper footing.

Seems pretty elementary to me.

Although I totally agree with your point, this kind of discipline doesn't go over well in today's NFL. Look at what happened with Singletary's firing today. I love Singletary's no nonsense coaching style. I love how, during yesterdays 49ers/Rams game, how Singletary got in to Troy Smith's grill and told him his play was unacceptable, but according to various reports, Singltary's confrontational coaching style, and of course his lack of success, got him fired and how the Singletary Smith confrontation on the sidelines was the last straw in Singletary getting fired. Today's athletes are too pampered.

but the expectations of the fans had nothing to do with the way the team plays. it can also take awhile for a team chemistry to come together.

you cna keep your unrealistic expectations and just be mad a lot i suppose. but the NFL isn't going to revert to what you want so you're just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I dont want the NFL to revert to what I want. Just the Cowboys.

So whats your point? Just clean house and rebuild? The offense is one of the top offenses in the league. The defense was one of the top defenses in the league in 09, but horribly regressed this year. This team has holes, but is still a very talented team. Get the right head coach, and fix the defense, and O-line and this team can be a Superbowl contender again.

My point is that it's easier said than done: fix the D, get the right HC, fix the OL, etc. Holy smokes this team has fallen so far so fast. You're basically saying we have to fix the majority of the team. We needed to surround those core players you mentioned with quality role players and the 09 draft has put us in a huge hole depth wise. In addition, the whole psyche of this team has taken a hit and it's going to take some hard work from JG or whoever the new coach is to change the culture of this team. It's shot.

And while you may not agree with me, I'm not so sure Jerry Jones is the guy to turn this franchise around and make the right decisions to fix the problems that you identified. On the contrary, he's the root cause of the problem.....

The yards and TDs get mitigated by the # of penalties and like 30 turnovers. In spite of all that, it is a good offense. My biggest concern with it is that the QBs have taken way too many hits behind that OL.

But the D is a completely different matter. I now look at the end of 2009 as an exception to what has been poor to mediocre play. They have holes at every level of the defense, the depth has eroded to nothing, and guys are getting older. I think we really do need a near complete rebuild on that side of the ball. There are a handful of guys that we obviously need to keep, but for the most part, I think they're a bunch of jags.

Reading through this thread I was wondering when someone was going to pick up on this...

i knew exactly what he meant when he said it. long ago i coined the "IGS" or "instant gratification society" where if a player does bad any given day CAN THEM. heaven forbid they ever get on the fans chitlist.

That's where I got it. I knew someone had stuck this phrase in my head and it just seemed to fit today.

Thanks for reminding me where it came from.

IMO, you fix the safety position, and get the right D-cord., you will see a much improved defense. There is still considerable talent on the defense. Holes yes, the biggest being the above mentioned positions.

While I agree with the content of the post and it's "inspiration", ALL of us Cowboys fans have been waiting for a heck of a lot longer than an instant for a "real" contender. So, while I understand the origin of frustration for the OP, "instant gratification" is far from what all of us have been waiting for. For those of us that have followed the Cowboys for longer than say 20 years, we were fans of the winningest franchise in the history of the league. We didn't make it to the Super Bowl every year, but we were a FACTOR every years (sans the late 1980's). We've now gone from 1995 to 2010 with a grand total of ONE playoff win. ONE! Think about how pathetic that is in the grand scheme of the NFL. One of the most proud franchises in the lore of pro football has one playoff win in over 15 seasons. The frustration of many fans here has very little to do with simply wanting to cut a kicker. It has a lot more to do with the fact that legitimate competition for that kicker's job was virtually non-existent. It has been a failed experiment and was a poor football decision. Now, if these types of decisions were more exception rather than norm then it would be easy to pass it off as a "mistake". Unfortunately, these types of decisions are not the exception. From staff selection to training camp schedules to personnel decisions this franchise has been bumbled like a Three Stooges movie for over a decade and a half. We've reached a level of ineptitude matched only my the likes of the Lions, Bengals, and Browns of the world. In the meantime, Jerry has been out foxed by the likes of Bill Bidwell and Tom Benson. BILL FREAKING BIDWELL! Are you kidding me?! Do you realize that the New York Jets (with a rookie QB) have won more playoff games in one year than the Dallas Cowboys have been able to muster in 15? Think about the history of this proud franchise and toss that little stat up next to it and see if "instant gratification" still fits the bill. We left "instant gratification" in the rear view mirror back in 1997. It's time for some results.

It all starts up front though. We get dominated by opposing OL's far too much. Need to start getting some push from that DL. NT is my biggest wish for this team.

15 years of frustration and our lack of success doesn't have anything to do with the topic of this thread. I am in the same boat as every one of you in being dissatisfied with this team since 1996. Yeah the monkey off our back last year was somewhat a relief, but it barely even reached the edge of the chasm.

This thread isn't about that. Isn't even close to that. And in fact isn't even the neighborhood of that topic.

Definitely would like a more traditional NT, but the Boys might already have that guy on the roster in Brent. I want to see what Brent can do with a full off-season under his belt. IMO safety is more of a priority.

I understand that, Hos. Believe me I do. I think a lot of the knee jerking around here, though has a lot more to do with everyone's overall contempt with this franchise than it does with a missed extra point or a blown coverage.

That's what I was illustrating more than anything.

I think I need professional help. I read the title as "We Need Instant Garrettification."
