We need him to play well. I have some hope that they will get something out of him. Dane Brugler had him ranked at 116. The Cowboys got him at 217. He should have gone somewhere in-between. Hopefully, Dane was right or close to it.
I do hope the depth at DT in the draft pushed him down to us. But, of course, the opposite of that is he was taken after a whole lot of other DTs so how good can he be?

For the role he plays and not having any value as a pass rusher, though, he always was going to go later than those who have upside against the pass. There are some exceptions to that as we saw with Tyleik Williams, but there has to be some hope in Detroit that Williams can eventually be a three-down player. There's no expectation of that with Toia. He's strictly an early-down run stuffer. He looks like more of a blocker magnet, holding his ground to take up blockers and make the back have to go around him, than a player likely to make many plays. If he succeeds in the role, the linebackers should have a cleaner path to the RB.

He’s an interesting prospect. He has the size you want in an NT and is hard to move.

My issue with him is his short arms. He has missed tackles because of his arm length. It limits his projection as a pass rusher too.

I hope so too just don’t know if it will be this year or in the next couple. Depends if he’s ready or not.

I have no faith in a 7th rounder being a big part of this team or even getting the chance to.
Cowboys had a late 4th/early 5th grade on him so they consider him a "steal". It's unlikely he will be big contributor this year but next year could be a different story.

Overview

Three-year starter with the build and mentality to play nose tackle in odd or even fronts. Toia carries a girthy base and is heavy into first contact. He has the power to give good resistance against all forms of blocks that come his way but a lack of length makes him more of a space eater than a block beater. He pummels single-block protection with violent club moves for sporadic pressures but is unlikely to get home. He’ll need to improve his block recognition and fine-tune his take-on to be his best version of a two-down run defender.

Strengths

  • Brings nose tackle thickness to the field.
  • Good aggression and effort level on each snap.
  • Battles double-teams with a wide base and strong back leg.
  • Drive power to penetrate the line versus finesse blocks.
  • Opens rush edge with violent slaps and club moves.

Weaknesses

  • Average hand quickness getting into first contact.
  • Lack of length allows blocks to crowd his chest.
  • Could struggle with shed quickness as an NFL two-gapper.
  • Unlikely to maintain gap integrity against stretch plays.
  • Tethered to his starting point, limiting his production.

You already giving up on Mazi? Hater.

We all hope Jay Toia develops into something. But it’s not fair to just expect a Day 3 long shot to be the magic bullet for a problem we’ve had in stopping the run for years.

Not saying Toia can’t be anything. But in the last 20 years, 74 DTs were drafted in the 7th round and approximately 4% ever become a multi-year starter. Conversely DTs taken on Day one and two have a near 40% chance. Because they are more talented. That simple.

Can it happen? Yes. Is it likely? No. Look I hope nothing but the best for Jay Toia. Hoping he’s part of the 4%!
