Week 1 vs Jets Notes/Prediction

Lots of unjustified confidence in this thread. This Jets team has been to the AFC title game two years running and has the best defense in football. Their offense isnt great, but they won't need to be to move the football on us.

Add in the ten year 9/11 anniversary emotion and this would be one of the more surprising wins in recent Cowboys memory IMO.

I'm still not high on the Jets. They overachieve IMO. I doubt they get to a superbowl with that team.

I think it'll be close, they are better than us though; but we can beat them. Patriots own that division.

I like Rex and the ****ing Jets. This is going to be a great game. First of all, those mentioning we should throw at Revis should get their heads checked. Although watching Dez go against him would be awesome. Jet fans may not know much about Bryant before this game but afterwards...they will.

This game will be all about turnovers. Sanchez vs Romo. Whoever protects the ball better will win.

I think we should test him some. You can't just leave him chillin on the island all game, test what he is made of. Although we will be throwing to Witten in the middle and at Cromartie most of the game.

I don't know how much better Revis is than Nnamdi but Miles toasted him the few times they matched up the last time we played Oakland. Guess we will find out next week how well Revis and Miles match up. Who wins? Toss a coin, it's a tough one to call.

A couple of other posters said it right - more likely than not, whoever Revis is covering will not be thrown at.

That's the respect every team gives to him. I watched Reggie Wayne have one catch for 4 yards in the divisional round of the playoffs this past year against us, and that was the only time he was targeted after recording 111 catches for 2nd in the NFL in receptions during the regular season.

If Peyton Manning stays away from Reggie Wayne because of a DB, you know that DB is great.

Besides - I've seen Revis absolutely shut down Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson - and I think if we're being objective (or as objective as fans can be) we can agree that the two of them are better than Miles Austin?

I don't think the confidence on your guys part about this game is a misguided, by no means. I just think when it comes to this particular debate, i.e. Austin v Revis, some of you just don't know Revis. Austin is a proven #1 WR in this league and I would say top 15 at his position. Revis is the best cornerback since Deion Sanders... and he specializes in taking the opponents best receiver out of the game.

That said, we've only got 6 days now till we can all see how the chips fall. No injuries!

I think the Jets win 27 to 20. I just don't think our defense is ready for prime time, and I have no clue as to how this young offensive line will react. Until I see those things, I can't in good faith pick them up against this caliber of team.

However, I really really really hope we win.

I like this Jets fan. He brings a good respectable debate to the table. I agree with everything you said. But I will say Austin will be our #2 receiver pretty soon. I want Tony to throw a ball at Dez while he is being covered by Revis. We should respect him, but we should test him some as well. Revis/Dez battling over a pass 1 on 1 would be something very entertaining to watch.

I agree our D scares me, but I'm glad we are facing the Jets O to start the season. It will be a battle of both teams strengths; our Offense vs. their Defense.

Nnamdi is better than revis and always has been so you're HIGH AS **** thinking revis is the best CB since Sanders.

That's a whole other debate. Both great players. I have had Nnamdi higher on my list than Revis; but Revis is younger and I think he will be better than Nnamdi.

On a side not, Revis shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Deion.

The people saying we should go after Revis with Austin are gonna be the same people raging about the gameplan after we lose. If we're dumb enough to do that Garrett should be fired on the spot.
Offensively this comes down to how well our OL holds up, our running game and how they deal with Witten. Dez is the wildcard

Sanchez might not be Brady but this D is the same group of guys that made Grossman and Vince Young look like all pros last season. I very much doubt they would have mastered Rob's scheme in a little over a month and our 1 and 2 CB have what? 2 weeks of Training camp between them.
Ware is gonna get his, but that's really the only thing we got going for us on D.

Our OL has looked decent in preseason but they've really not been tested they line up and block who's in front of them they haven't seen anything exotic yet and that could spell disaster come Sunday. If Costa can't go we'll be starting 3 rookies on that line against probably the most confusing front 7 in the NFL. If we get out of this with Romo starting week 2 we should consider it a win

I'd take Vince Young over Sanchez any day. Watching the Jets offense is one of the worst things you can watch in the NFL. It is one ugly struggle bus when Sanchez is moving the ball.

Their Defense though; they come to play. I wont question the game plan if Revis picks off Tony, because I firmly believe that you can not just ignore his side of the field the entire game. I wouldn't advise going after him all the time though.

Cowboys stun the Jets in their house 24-10.

They've got a lot more to lose than we do, all the pressure is on them, we're flying under the radar, we're young, talented, and naive enough to walk outta there with a win and reel 3 more off before we face N.E.

That's the way I hope the teams is thinking anyway.

Sanchez has made the plays when he's needed to and gotten them to back to back AFC championship games and he's done so against defenses a hell of a lot better then ours. I gimpy Newman ain't stopping anyone and after 2010 i don't have a lot of faith in Jenkins either. You don't need to be Brady or Manning to hit wide open WRs

Eh Sanchez is awful (54% completion lol), he is the only reason that team hasn't made a super bowl. Our corners definitely a weakness, but our pass rush will help them out; and I think we are more solid at corner than people think. Don't get me wrong they are the better team, but they definitely are beatable. I like the fact that our strengths match up against each other.

I'm not worried about Revis too much as he is only one player. I'm more concerned about the Jets D as a whole, and while Revis' guy might not get much, if you judge by last year, more often than not, somebody is going to get some good receiving numbers against them.

Here's the top receiver for the team facing the Jets each week last year:

Code:
Name (Team) Rec - Yds - TDs

[B]Boldin (Balt) 7 - 110
Hernandez (NE) 6 - 101
Marshall (Mia) 10 - 166 - 1[/B]
Nelson (Buf) 4 - 75
[B]Harvin (Min) 5 - 97 - 2[/B]
Gaffney (Den) 6 - 81
Jennings (GB) 6 - 81
[B]Burleson (Det) 7 - 113 - 1[/B]
Watson (Cle) 5 - 74
[B]Dressen (Hou) 4 - 106 - 1[/B]
Ochocinco (Cin) 4 - 41
[B]Woodhead (NE) 4 - 104[/B]
Fasano (Mia) 2 - 33
[B]Wallace (Pit) 7 - 102
Knox (Chi) 4 - 92 - 2[/B]
Johnson (Buf) 5 - 72

Please don't take Detroit for granted! They will be a very difficult team to beat this season.

Would love to see that matchup too - damn I can't wait till Sunday, hopefully we get to see that.

BTW, for those of you saying Nnamdi is better than Revis - just wanted to point out that Nnamdi's whole career he only plays one side of the field whereas Revis lines up across the #1 WR on the other team wherever that player goes. Revis follows the #1 all across the field and challenges him every play whereas Nnamdi plays his side of the field regardless of who lines up across him. Just thought I'd point that out.

So do you think Revis picks one guy our whole game or will he line up on Austin and Dez?

What pass rush? Ware was the only player on this team to consistently get to that QB

Our strengths don't match up at all, their biggest strength is their defensive front 7 our 2nd biggest weakness after secondary if not our biggest is our inexperienced OL

We might be better at CB then what they showed last season i honestly think that to, but there was no offseason program and both our top 2 missed almost all of training camp. Even if 2010 never happened that would worry me.

One advantage we'll probably have as the season goes on is Rob schemes, Jets run a similar one and probably knows our D better then we do at this point

Offensively their biggest strengths are their OL and WR depth after seeing our DL get pushed back several yards on just about every running play in the preseason i can't sit here and say our front 7 is a strength at this point and our secondary on a good day might be nothing more then average at best.

Not saying we can't win, this team seems to play their best when people write them off just saying pretty much all the match ups in this game favor them

Almost always Rex decides that it's one player that gets the Revis treatment. I'm betting that stays the same and it's Austin. The only real exception to that was against the Patriots, and that's largely because since Moss left, they don't really have a #1 and the ball is spread around so much - plus we play a lot more zone against the Patriots because we need to mix it up and try to confuse Brady ~ it worked in the playoffs last year :D.

For what it's worth from my perspective, Austin's route-running is far more polished than Dez, and that type of precision could eat up Cromartie. Plus Cro's athleticism and size actually make him a solid matchup v Dez, although I just worry if Dez does catch the pass and we have to count on Cro to tackle him...

If I was a betting man, I'd say it's Revis on Austin. Dez is clearly the better talent, but he's still too young and raw to be considered a bigger threat than Austin in my opinion.

On top of all that, I'd say Witten gets the most targets in this game. He's the guy I'm scared of the most in this game. Cromartie, while people have a lot of opinions about him either way it would seem, actually played great last year for us and I expect him only to get better as he gets used to our system.

But we have no linebacker or safety that can handle Witten, is my point. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he had a big game regardless of the final score - which I put at 20-16 in favor of the Jets : ). Our D will propel us to win the turnover battle and that will decide the game... in my opinion.
