There are 31 other teams in the NFL besides the Cowboys as you all know. The Cowboys hold an advantage in the regular season head to head series against 22 of those 31 teams. 3 of the all time series are tied. That means 6 teams hold an advantage over the Cowboys in the their all time head to head series. The Denver Broncos are one of the teams holding an advantage in the all time regular season head to head series. They lead the Cowboys 5-4. This game could be about leveling that series.

In 2009 this is one of only two games where we play against any team we are tied with, or behind in the regular season head to head series. The other team is the Raiders who lead 6-3 and can't be caught this year. In other words, I want to win this one really bad.

Of course long time Cowboys fans know the head to head series really is tied if you include Super Bowl XII in the picture. That puts the series at 5-5. A win this time means we take over the all time lead in the head to head series. I personally keep the post season and regular season separate in those calculations, but I would entertain arguments as to why I should not.

The Broncos currently have a 3 game winning streak against the Cowboys. The last time they played the win was set up by Ron Dayne going 55 yards in the overtime to set up a game winning 24 yard chip shot Field Goal. That was the Cowboys last loss on Thanksgiving. They have won 3 straight since that wretched day.

The Broncos are one of the 8 charter franchises of the 1960 American Football League. Unlike the Cowboys, they are actually celebrating their 50th anniversary season this year. The Broncos played at Mile High Stadium from 1960 through 2000. In 2001 they moved into a new stadium just as we did this year. This game will be played at Invesco Field at Mile High. Yes, this is a new stadium, not just a new corporate name for the old stadium.

The Broncos first owner was Bob Howsam. He sold the Broncos in 1964 to the Phipps brothers. They kept it until 1981. Edgar Kaiser owned the team until 1984 when current owner Pat Bowlen bought it from him.

The Broncos enjoy claiming to be the first AFL team to ever beat an NFL team. This game happened in August 1967. If you know the NFL calendar very well you know this means it was a pre-season game. They beat the Detroit Lions 13-7 on August 5, 1967. Wouldn't you know it would have to be the Lions?

Everyone know the true 1st ever win by an AFL team over an NFL team was Joe Namath and the Jets over the Colts in Super Bowl III one year later at the end of the 1968 season. The original 8 AFL teams did not begin playing the NFL teams in the regular season until the 1970 season and the merger of the AFL and NFL. The truth of the matter is in week 1 of the 1970 season 2 AFL teams beat NFL teams. Houston beat Pittsburgh and Boston (now New England) beat Miami.

The Broncos all time regular season record is 389-344-10. They are 17-15 in the post season, putting their all time winning record at 406-359-10.

The Broncos have made 6 trips to the Super Bowl, 5 of them happened with John Elway at QB. He is undoubtedly their best player ever. The Broncos lost 4 straight Super Bowls before winning the last 2 they played in and seeing Elway ride off into the sunset after Super Bowl XXXIII in the 1998 season.

Much like the Cowboys have struggled to replace Troy Aikman, the Broncos have struggled to replace Elway. Until Gary Zimmerman was elected to the Hall in 2008 Elway was their only Hall of Famer having been inducted himself 4 years earlier in 2004. One difference is that the Broncos have only had 2 losing seasons post-Elway.

They thought they finally had the guy to replace Elway in Jay Cutler, but new coach Josh McDaniel screwed that up and Cutler exited stage left. McDaniel is the 12th Head Coach in Broncos History. The Broncos are one of only 3 teams to have 3 different Head Coaches lead them to a Super Bowl, but unlike the Cowboys and Steelers, only one of their Head Coaches won the big game, Mike Shanahan.

The Broncos can stake the claim to one all time record, but it is not a good one. They are the proud owners of the all time ugliest NFL uniforms. In their inaugural year of 1960 and through 1962 they wore brown jerseys with brown pants, along with brown and yellow striped socks. There was a public bonfire to celebrate the exorcism of the socks.

In Super Bowl XII when the Cowboys and Broncos met, both teams were 12-2. It was the last season of 14 games. The Broncos made it to the Super Bowl on the shoulders of a dominating Defense that had been nicknamed Orange Crush after their then jersey color and a soft drink. Soft was a good description for the Broncos that day, which was the first ever indoor Super Bowl. The other Defense that day were the dominating squad on the field as Doomsday harassed former Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl starting QB Craig Morton unmercifully.

It didn't pay to forget about Doomsday. Two of the Cowboys D-linemen were named as co-MVPs and it easily could have added Too Tall Jones. He, and Co-MVPs Randy White and Harvey Martin tortured Morton into turnover after turnover and pile drove him into the ground repeatedly with sacks.

3-1 would sure feel good.

Dang Hos --you are a wealth of information--Thanks for the "stuff"

So, coach, how much faith do you have that your team can beat Cowboys on Sunday?:

Denver is always a tough place to play, no matter how sorry their teams appear to be. I still want revenge for the brutal losses we took to the hands of them in the late 90's. I recall Terrell Davis gashing us for something like 200 yards. I hope to return the favor.

Posted this elsewhere but I think it's appropriate here as well...

bump - great read . Thanks Hos.

Good read. I always like learning about the history of teams that I'm not too familiar with. Thanks.

The Broncos hold the all time record for worst loss in Superbowl history, don't they? (55-10 loss to the 49ers)

Yep, they do. They lost all 4 Super Bowls by big margins.

XII...Cowboys 27, Broncos 10

XXI...Giants 39, Broncos 20

XXII...Commanders 42, Broncos 10

XXIV...49ers 55, Broncos 10

That spawned a joke.

How many Broncos does it take to change a tire? Just one. Unless it's a blowout, then they all show up.
