I don't want to move back in with my parents. I'm thinking of becoming an Air Force Officer. The bad thing is, I probably go to training and miss the whole season. The other bad thing, I sign 4 years of my life away. That means I get out when I'm 30. There just aren't many options out there. Any suggestions? You guys have been great with my computer issues (especially Kilyin. Thanks a lot, man.).

yeah that military thing is a *****, I mean think about it, join at 26, retire at 46 with full pension and benefits prob around a O-5, heck you'd prob only go in as a O-1 or 2 and that's only 2655.30 for a O-1 and 3058 for a O-2... oh yeah if you live off base as a O-2 you receive an addiotional 717 a month

Now a O-5 which would take about 10 years they only make 6025 a month, that sucks! oh yeah and if you live off base without kids that's 1218.00 more a month plus comrats (food allowance) of 223.04 btw the 1218 and 223 are tax free so you'd be making around 7500 a month, and if you have dependents the BAQ is 1472...

so you start making 3800 a month (off base) which btw your health care is included...

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the 30 days of paid Leave (vacation) each year; which if you don't use it it'll roll over to the next year or you can sell it back to them, now what other job can you get where you start with 30 days off a year?

and retire at 46 IDK but looks crappy to me...

Why did you pursue a degee in Business and Management?

It's a great degree to have because you can do just about anything with it.

I'm assuming in your years of college you had to do business plans, projects, etc. on various types of businesses. Did you ever do one on anything that interested you that you could see yourself possibly doing that for yourself in the future?

As for money -- it's out there if you research and look for it. There is the SBA, numerous grants -- sure not enough to pay for everything, but any little bit helps. There are loans from banks, private investors, etc. I saw on Headline News today Samuel Adams has grant money for those wanting to start up bars and restaurants (so checking that out!). Until today I didn't know that money out there to help get a business started.

Check your school and see if they have any entrepreneurship meetings that you can attend. They'll have small business owners coming into chat and give their experience, and how they got started. Attend these -- they may be hiring and it's a great way to acquire knowledge from them.

It takes a lot of hard work, research, and time, but in the end it is all yours!

in addition to this, I might ask around your college professors and see if any of them are involved in business management

my Intro to Computers professor was a higher up in a business

so maybe one of those guys are too and may give you a reference

I chose this degree because I knew I would end up working at some business and I felt Business Management was a good major. It's just tough out there. I found a good job today that pays $30K a year and I'll fax them my resume tomorrow. Their fax was busy earlier.

If you are able to get a full time job, right now as well as get benefits, in this economy, you should be very happy.

I like the Cowboys and would rather not miss the season. Sorry that offends you. And yeah, giving someone 4 years of my life is a big decision. Some people want to go to basic training in the winter. What about their attitude of not wanting to train in the heat?

It doesn't offend me in the least what you want to do in your life and the priorities you set.

What I'm saying is, if the football season is more important to you, then the military is not a good idea for you. I've "missed" 3 seasons deployed to Iraq, but I considered what I was doing there more important than getting to watch every game I wanted.

Like I said, priorities.

As for people wanting to go to training in the winter so as to miss out on the heat, then they've got no idea what they're in for. They'll be doing plenty of training during the heat later on.

Grad Sues College for $70,000 Because She Can't Find a Job

Sunday, August 02, 2009

She has given new meaning to a class-action lawsuit.

Trina Thompson gave it the old college try, but couldn't find work. Now she thinks her sheepskin wasn't worth her time, and is suing her alma mater for her money back.

The Monroe College grad wants the $70,000 she spent on tuition because she hasn't found gainful employment since earning her bachelor's degree in April, according to a suit filed in Bronx Supreme Court on July 24.

The 27-year-old alleges the business-oriented Bronx school hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain, and has not done enough to find her a job.

The information-technology student blames Monroe's Office of Career Advancement for not providing her with the leads and career advice it promised.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," the frustrated Bronx resident wrote about the school in her lawsuit.

Fax? I would wonder about a company that still uses the fax. We have a fax here at work. I use it only to fax my expense trip report. Ohter than that, I don't even use a fax anymore.

You could consider taking a position as an English teacher abroad. Commitments are usually 6 months to a year, housing is sometimes provided and if you work in a country with a favorable exchange rate then you could come back with a little extra money when their are more jobs out there. Having a degree would virtually make you a lock for getting a position and sometimes the pay isn't as low as you'd think. I remember, about a year ago, seeing a position that paid $31 an hour for 20-30 hour work weeks. Now, that was in Saudi Arabia, but still.

Just another option, that you may not have thought about.

Teaching English in Japan pays around $30K plus bennies. Better than nothing. And one of those bennies is Japanese chicks, if that rocks your boat. And the food is great.
