Kobe, before you go off the deep end, take a deep breath, and listen to what I have to so to you:
The Skins made a big splash, it's true... but they did so by overpaying, and overpaying rather badly, for some grade B talent... Carter, Archuleta, Randle El, Lloyd and Fauria are good players, but nobody's gonna call them great (except, of course, for some witless home Skins fans, who are not to be taken seriously)...
In fact, just a few minutes ago I read something over on Yahoo that roundly criticized the Skins for their early activites... written by Charles Robinson, the teaser link to it is titled "Skins' purchases haven't been money well spent"... Robinson writes:
If anyone questioned whether the Washington Commanders would have dominated free agency in an uncapped NFL, the answer came over the weekend.
The Commanders doled out massive deals for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El and St. Louis Rams safety Adam Archuleta – while also trading for San Francisco 49ers wideout Brandon Lloyd and committing to giving him a new contract. While it's not a surprise to see the Commanders so active in the market, the deals given to both Randle El and Archuleta had some surprising numbers.
By all accounts, the Commanders overpaid for Randle El and Archuleta, committing $22 million in signing and roster bonuses to a pair of players who were considered wildly overrated free agents in many circles. Archuleta's deal – the richest pact for a safety in NFL history – will pay him an average of roughly $5 million per season, while Randle El's $11.5 million signing and roster bonuses – and $31 million total – are more lucrative than some contracts given to No. 1 receivers.
I never realized that Archuleta's deal is the richest ever given to a safety, and of course that's a total farce... Archuleta isn't even in the league's 10 best safeties at this point, largely because he's a bit of a liability in coverage...
I don't know that I agree with Robinson's characterization of Randle El and Archuleta as "wildly overrated", but I sure don't think they've tipped the balance of power in the NFC East...
